Both Ippo and Miyata got the ultimate culture shock! I believe, though, that both of them can close the gap!

I think one of the most important things to notice is that s1 ippo would have shit himself freaking out over the fight before it even starts but ippo just dived in head first here

This along with Zoro vs Mihawk are such great moments of setting the power ceiling in world. Martinez reminds me a lot of Mihawk

I like to explain Ricardo's ability to catch Ippo during his head movement this way to myself: Ippo always moves his head to establish the horizontal 8 pattern for some time before starting to punch, and Ricardo didn't respond immediately, i.e. he took some time to grasp the timing of the head movement, which in itself is pretty predictable. I've seen exceptional people in other sports pull off similar things, even in archery with such a great distance between the archer and the target. Provided the movement of the target is somewhat predictable. Definitely still an incredible feat though. And the other part is probably the speed of punches. The examples you give are usually from the heavyweight division (or heavyweight back then, i.e. cruiserweight now?), but Ippo and Ricardo are featherweights, so naturally Ricardo's speed is quite a bit faster than Ali's could ever be, just by virtue of having less mass and therefore less inertia to overcome. That probably helps a lot in terms of precision. That's jsut my take on things though. Great reaction as usual :)

Two issues though: A good trainer would work with his fighter to NOT make his head movements completely predictable. For instance, mixing up the amount of crouch, which changes the level of the head, swinging a little wider to one side than the other and stuff like that. Because you're absolutely right that, if your head movement follows a perfect pattern, you're defeating your own purpose... The other thing is, absolutely the lower weight guys have quicker hands. However, they also typically have much quicker head and body movements, so that should come out as basically a wash... In any event, though, punching down at an opponent who is in motion and hitting with accuracy, is really impressive! :-)

Ricardo is using a step in jab or ghost jab that's why his punches look like they stretch further. This ironically was invented by Jack Dempsey himself. Its Dempsey's jab vs Dempsey roll

Fun fact, Ricardo Martinez is based off of the boxer Ricardo Lopez who went undefeated for 52 matches with 38 KOs. However, Martinez was made even more OP lol.

WHOLESOME DEUS

Ricardo Lopez but in anime form 👀
