Ippo being timid can also be a benefit, in that he never gets cocky and underestimates his opponent, so he always goes all out when preparing for a fight even if he's got the advantage. Also, we see that Ippo's fear of Mashiba is stronger than his boner for Kumi in this ep :p

From what I gather about the timid nature, it was pretty much ingrained in him due to years of bullying and having no friends while not wanting to worry his mom. Having to help out the family business from his young teenage years to almost his 20’s (at least 5 years) didn’t really give him much communication experience.

That whole sequence over the phone with Kumi is great. How she shuffles away from her brother is adorable to how she shoves him to the ground when he tries to take the phone to him and getting up like the undead in a horror film to him flicker jabbing the phone from Kumi the whole thing is funny as fuck.

That and I would say his mentality in boxing up to this point - he’s been so much about trying his best and learning and setting these goals to “fight his best” against someone (Miyata, Sendo, Date) but never really to win the match or win the title outside of as a step to get his goal (Mashiba up to this point is the one fight I think he had that hunger to actually “win” and beat the other guy). Experiencing a loss may be what he needs to get that hunger to win, not just compete

Date said there's no more challengers in the country but I'm confident that Volg would beat him.
