Ol' Drago here certainly hasn't been able to do a very good job of dealing with tragedies in a productive manner.

yeah Ivan's backstory is rough but he seems like an asshole anyway, purposefully cheating and acting he's still better than Miyata among other things. So yeah Ippo needs to give him a solid KO to the chin.

I think you are mistaken about something, aside from his cheating in boxing I'm pretty sure he's been judged by his physical appearance in prior jobs, his downer demeanor and rough appearance had led people to assume he's had bad intentions even before he did anything which led him to have an even worse perspective on life, not to mention how his negative demeanor basically came from the loss of his parents, as old as he looks we still have to remember he's probably 17-18 at this point in the story which means he lost his parents at around 14 and has been kind of forced to work to support his sister, these don't excuse his actions in the ring but I'm just trying to give you a little more insight to his character

PissedtfOFF

Also the fact that after his parents passed other relatives and people were very quick to accept his sister into their homes but not him due to them basically judging a book by his cover, and of course his sister would refuse to stay with them because it wasn't worth leaving her brother out in the streets by himself

WHOLESOME DEUS

I find it admirable that Mashiba is going this far in order to provide his younger sister with a better life. It's not like he's being a scumbag day in and day out, there is no honor in cheating but he was out classed in that match and that's probably all he can think of inorder to win

Because someone might be a douche, it doesn't mean they are entirely without redeeming qualities. What he's done for his sister is admirable - even though he still treats her rather poorly at times - but that doesn't change who he's decided to be to the rest of the world... So, even if we want to excuse him for cheating to get a win, what is the excuse for being an absolute asshole about it after the fact?... Sometimes, we tend to look at things only from the perspective of who has the saddest backstory. If it's understandable that he had to cheat to win, then it's understandable to dislike him for it, considering the guy who lost had put his whole life into this dream and it was taken away from him by an act that he had no way to see coming or defend himself against, as he thought he was competing under certain rules.

Mashiba needs an entire box of Snickers. One ain't gonna cut it.

This episode is very fascinating, because I feel that this whole episode and particularly the ending segment of Mashiba's speech perfectly describe Mashiba's character and his biggest downfall as a person: basically, he has completely resigned himself to being the bad guy because he believes that nobody believes him. What's REALLY interesting though is that this actually may imply that Mashiba's foot stomp could have been an accident: the thing is though, since Mashiba has already established himself as an enormous prick, even if he unintentionally did something that would be considered cheating, he's not even going to try to deny it one bit because he thinks "What's the point? they think i'm an asshole anyways." So I honestly think that the show actually wanted to subtly tell us that Mashiba's foot stomp was NOT intentional, but since Mashiba refuses to change for the better as a person (and continues to think that everybody judges him negatively... which ironically also results in him judging everybody else, leading to a vicious cycle which is bound to screw you up mentally...), everybody is certain that he cheated (even the sharp Takamura), so it's pretty much his own fault at this point that people will always see him as an asshole who would DEFINATELY cheat, basically shooting himself in the foot (or I guess stomping in this case) with the mentality that he has chosen to embrace.

That's definitely what I got from this when I first was reading Ippo
