Could it just be cockiness that allows Pretty Boy to fight Ippo's fight or is there actually some strategy to it?

Ippo is not really designed to be seen as a prodigy, as he's not a natural fighter; he's not naturally good at anything other than punching and training, really. He has no real boxing sense, can't grasp timing or high-level techniques easily. He's more like Rock Lee - someone who has to compensate for his lack of ability with heavy punches and LOTS of effort. His physique was a good basis for him to become a boxer, but training the body is easy compared to being born with boxing talent. At least that's what this show is going for, in many ways. Takamura and Miyata are the 2 current deuteragonist geniuses for the viewer to follow. There will be more in the future. They have their own struggles, of course, but generally, it's not the boxing itself that is the issue, it's the dieting, etc. and in Miyata's case his lack of punching power. Takamura has everything though - genius-level talent, a great physique, superior boxing sense, and enormously heavy punches :D

This and the Kobashi fight are two of my least favorite fights. Ippo wins bc his opponent becomes stupid/cocky more than by his own skill. Luckily after this, oh boy things get better

Yup, I have a very solid sense of who Ippo is, as that's exactly how I came into boxing: Heavy hands and a love for the gym, but little else... It's one of the reasons I'm enjoying this so much: there is so much that is personally recognizable for me.
