Doflamingo is on a rampage, so Smoker better hope that Aokiji is serious about putting an end to it!

Doflamingo was presented very differently in the anime from the manga here. In the anime Doflamingo was mostly overwhelming Smoker (without his weapon) but they were still fighting back and forth, dodging, missing etc and neither dealing real damage. And Doflamingo only (could?) take him down first when he protected his subordinates. For all we know Smoker could be actually stronger than Doffy if not protecting them or able to beat him based on what we see here. Or at least with his weapon, things would go better. THIS, is what we cannonically saw happen in the manga: https://s71.mkklcdnv7.com/mangakakalot/r1/read_one_piece_manga_online_free4/chapter_698_doflamingo_appears/11.jpg Sadly the anime often wants to do lots of filler, especially for offscreen fights, and the thing is they're not very good with powerscaling, or keeping it accurate or consistent or representative properly in line with the manga or what is later seen to be the case.

I don't see how you can get the impression of smoker matching doffy from the anime.

Schmul Sjifris

Aah, let me be clearer. Doflamingo is in my impression and with the given impression playing with Smoker. BUT a lot of enemies did the same with Luffy before he kicked their teeth in. Kuro, Arlong, Krieg, Croco, Lucci etc. In this series this level of playing could still leave room for the possiblity that Smoker would actually have a shot at winning in an extended fight. I'm not saying he would nor that that is the impression are given. But it's THINKABLE. It wouldnt be out of this world. It could be. In One Piece people have won fights like this later on or beat people overwhelming them to this degree, in fact most of Luffys enemies initially overwhelmed him to a much higher degree than this. Plus Smoker doesnt have his weapon, could dodge and fight Doflamingo (even if not serious) and only got taken down protecting his men. Even when Luffy has overcome enemies that seem this much stronger without any of those disadvantages Smoker suffered.

What I mean is the impression in the original is vastly different. It leaves very little room for interpretation and gives a much more different level impression. In the manga, when Doffy looked at Smoker, he was dead. There was no fight to be had there. The impression was, if Doffy wants Smoker dead, that's that. No playing around, just playing into his rage (the rage that mysteriously just said poof in the anime for him to play around), he showed his intention to kill Smoker. And the next panel was bloodsplatter and a broken cigarr flying in the air. It gives a different impression. No I dont think the anime gave the impression Smoker could beat or match Doffy either. But the impression in the manga just showed him as so vastly much more overwhelming and on another level that there's quite the difference. Ps: The animes notion that Smoker could dodge Doflamingos attacks is also not really matching canon. I have no idea why he would even be able to see them, less so dodge them. We can't. Never have been able to. Doffy is given the impression of being siginifcantly stronger in the manga than in the anime. Man I remember thinking Doflamingo was so goddamn next level, not even comparable to previous villains at this point in the manga.

Schmul Sjifris

I'm not just hating on the anime, what I mean is just, Doflamingo is supposed to be stronger than what is shown here, that's my only point. And to be aware of this. But you can also just interpret it as him not taking this even remotely seriously here, but then we aren't seeing a glimpse of how powerful he really is since how much he's holding back is not clear.

SpazBoysComedy

That's really interesting... I like reading these takes, particularly on parallels and differences between anime and manga. :-)

Yuion

I mean he got low diffed by one of doffys subordinates. How can he be stronger than doffy?

Schmul Sjifris

Maybe Vergo is to Doffy what Lucci was to Spandam😂 Subordinates are not always weaker, but yeah, in One Piece it is generally the correct idea that they are.

Tpoints

Doffy's whole aura and presence speaks for itself anyway - without even needing to see his power. Even before we even knew what he could do he was one of the most hyped up villains in the one piece community bc of his position and how he carried himself.

SpazBoysComedy

Agreed... The limited amount of time we actually spent with him prior to this was more than enough to be extremely intimidated by him!

Bit unrelated, since everyone knows Doflamingo gonna kick Smoker’s ass until Aokiji shows up. But if anyone is interested in watching free live tv online, Check out this free streaming service called Pluto.TV. Has a variety of channels including movies from each decade, classic tv shows, the news in a few regions and... They have 3 dedicated anime channels -A 24/7 Naruto channel (OG Naruto only) -A 24/7 One Piece channel (Ep 1 - Ep 205) -A standard 24/7 anime channel (Bleach, JoJo, Death Note, etc.) Again, Pluto.tv is a free legal streaming website/could be an app on your TV. Just wanted to share this so people can causally watch their favorite shows while doing other tasks or just trying to kill time.

Advertisement in Patreon comment section... You really cant escape it anymore

Brother E

Lmao, nah really advertising. Mainly just spreading the word since it’s something I’ve been personally enjoying as of recent. Figured I can share with people another space to go chill out and not have to worry about the hardships happening in their lives during these hard times. Gooshers gotta look after one another.

The main issue is that the anime at this point is turning 1 chapter of the manga into 1 episode of the anime, where the norm is usually 2 chapters of manga into 1 episode of anime, therefore they have to fill in a lot of time with fluff material. That's why a lot of fights get dragged out, even though they were supposed to take place rather quickly. You'll have a fight where one guy absolutely dominates the other and crushes them almost instantly in the manga, but the anime will drag it out and make it look more even for a while. It kinda ruins the whole point of the fight in the first place which was to establish who was obviously stronger.

Lewd Angel

Its sometimes hard for me to take Doffy seriously, but then other times the dude is bone chilling, hes a really well done villain

Schmul Sjifris

Yes, Joshua! That is definitely part of the problem! :D Well put and explained and good observation. I didnt really think of it. The fluff they have to put between things can actually do serious harm to the meaning expressed in the way it was when it wasn't fluffed out.

Miasimon

Without spoiling anything, there will be no doubt when Kaido shows up. You will KNOW if someone is Kaido or not. He doesn't exactly blend in with a crowd.

The plan to take down Kaido as I understand it: GROUP UP AND HIT IT TILL IT DIES!!!!!!

2021-09-23 14:42:03 Even with all the cool outfits everyone went through on Punk Hazard, you're gonna find that Dressrosa has (in my opinion) the coolest and most attractive wardrobe for the Strawhats & company in the entire series. There have been a lot of cool costumes/outfits throughout the series and even more in the future, but I think Dressrosa still inches out as the peak of One Piece fashion. Even in this episode, you get to see everyone donning a new set of clothes, hell, even Law changed it up and has a swanky feather scarf!
