Askeladd is one of the most fascinating and conflicting characters I've seen! I have both admiration and derision for him!

He's just now starting to realize he's wasted 10 years of his life playing the pawn to someone with a much greater purpose than him. Don't know if you noticed but as far as the story goes in this season, Thorfinn doesn't really contribute much to it. But that's kinda the point. This is just the prologue after all.

Yea, I’ve been fascinated by how the protagonist is clearly not the main character through this part. 😊

Curious if you've already finished it how close were any of your predictions to how the story turned out because when i read this i never saw anything coming

Thorfinn is the overarching protagonist of Vinland Saga, but this arc is Askeladd's story. And yet it is so incredibly important for Thorfinn's (and Canute's for that matter) character arc moving forward. More I won't say as that would constitute spoilers.

Askeladd is one of those all time great characters that straddles the lines of morality.

You gotta think that Askeladd must be carrying a huge amount of regret and guilt over killing Thors, considering that he found the man who is just the incarnation of Artorious or the perfect leader and had him killed. That probably made him truely feel like just another 'norse savage' who would fight against the return of his hero. It goes all the way back to then when he asked him to be his leader then played it off as a joke. It's like the priest said "death perfects a person" and Thors' death perfected him in Askeladds mind as who he was searching for all this time.

Askeladd's story is really interesting. It explains so much of his hatred for Vikings and even himself. I think in some ways he'd be happy if Thorfinn managed to use some cunning and kill him. It's kind of like a messed up father/son relationship.

This little sequence right here is what cemented Askeladd as the one of my favourite characters. I was honestly glad he got his revenge on his father, to him his father wasn't some figure that shaped him into manhood. He was the bastard that raped his mother, then threw her to die in the stables when she fell ill. I would kill the man that had done that to my mother as well. Honestly the fact that he set the brothers against each other is of no consequence either. It's just icing on the revenge cake, to kill a man and set his sons at each other's throats.

The thing I like the best about most every character in this show is that they're all written in a way where you can look at the way they conduct their lives based on what's occurred to each of them and you can't argue that what any of them are doing is wrong. Every one of them is justified, even in some strange and stretched sense, because of how life has brought them up and crashed them down.
