I like our Otaku Kid here! He got shafted, but instead of being a bitch about it, he's looking to kick some ass!

Myne is bitch, yes. Almost wanted to skip this first episode because of her, but this being G100, I can't know when you react to next episode. I made a list of voice cast by roles you might recognize: Shield hero = Iida(MHA)/ Genos(OPM) Sword = Bell (Dan)/ Inosuke(DS)/ Sora(NgNl)/ Souma(FW)/ Kirito(SAO) Bow/Spear = no important roles Shopkeeper = Sado(Bl)/ 'Tiffany'(Shopkeeper SAO)/ Copycat(Mimasaka Subaru FW) Slavetrader = GranTorino(MHA)/ Dr.Agasa(DC)/ Dr.Kuseno(OPM)/ Nebraska Father(3G) [apparently many 'old guy'/inventor roles] Slavegirl at the end = CZ ('robot maid' Overlord) *abbreviations; MHA-My Hero Academia, OPM-One Punch Man, Dan-Danmachi(Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon), DS-Demon Slayer, NgNl-No Game No Life, FW-Food Wars, SAO-Sword Art Online, Bl-Bleach, DC-Detective Conan/Case Closed, 3G-Trigun

Shield Hero is an awesome series and I'm amped that you're reacting to it. I'm also sad that it's only going to be once per month, but it's better than nothing!

J Johnson

Curtis needs to see more isekai series, Slime and Cautious Hero would be good follow ups.

I used to read the manga for this, but I ended up falling behind because I got busy. But there's some real cool and interesting stuff coming up.

Daolord Badlands

I read the light novel for this a long time ago before I saw the anime. I feel like they did a pretty good job on the adaptation, but it could have been better.

Freddy Jimenez

Hey Curtis. Of Mayne was real would Marry fuck or kill?

mfasi

What a great vid to come home from work too! Glad you liked it, I'll try to sponsor two more episodes next month 😁

SpazBoysComedy

That was a GREAT first episode!... I already have a lot of respect for the protagonist and a villain I find to be as vile as she is hot! 😄

Fun fact: Ren (the Sword Hero) is basically one big reference to Kirito from Sword Art Online. For example, they have the same color scheme, the same voice actor, they both use a sword, both are "edgelord loners" and Ren's world's version of the game was a VRMMO called Brave Star Online :P

Shield Hero, all aboard the hate train! Seriously it is rare to find a supporting character in this show that you don't hate at some point in the series.

Michael Aagaard Nielsen

Shield Hero's first episode in a nutshell: They had us in the first half, i'm not gonna lie.

August B Denys

I have a love-hate relationship with this show. While I write this I don't quote specifics or make any specific mentions, the most I do is talk about abstract movements. The love comes from making the main character an anti-hero. The hate comes from how that anti-hero was made. Yes, we all love to hate on the backstabbing girl; however, and this is purely from a sociological criticism, the show basically creates its audience as affirming the hatred from the place of the incel. What do I mean? Consider this as a work of art, or as a work of culture: while in the social space created for the world of the anime, the way in which that social space was created was from our cultural perspectives. There was vitriol when this anime came out as an anime (I know because when it came out as a manga and carried the same story beats it wasn't even noticed) because the act that tore down the shield hero was a false rape claim. In the anime's world, the charge of rape and attempted rape is met with death as stated in the anime; however, if we consider the forces at play (the semiosis), then we can see that the shield hero's life was ruined by a false rape claim. This false rape claim has been the center of the controversy from this show. Why? It's difficult to explain in this simple comment, yet if we consider the real world, then we notice a few contrasting differences. 1) Rape claims are taken less seriously. 2) When rape is claimed, it is more likely than not to be the case, that is the probability of it being real is very high. And 3) the crux of the problem, in our admittedly, historically constructed society, it is a society that is patriarchal, as in the patriarchs have been given forethought in its construction and leadership (I state it in this way as to hopefully ward off as much skepticism as possible). Thus, in this crux, we can see a resonance point in the audience this is made for and the ideas that resonance bolsters. That is to say, "I, like the shield hero, am mistreated by women! Therefore, I root for this hero because this hero reflects me! One who is a nice guy but always made involuntarily celibate!" There were some other objections from places like Kotaku that said to the likeness of, "how dare he buy a child slave!" However, the problem with that is the lack of context the Kotaku writer had. Nevertheless, I have a love-hate relationship with this show because of this initial resonance which I do not find to be resolved well enough. I read the manga for a long time before watching the show, and I mainly stopped with both because of this. This show is fun. It has fun powers and fun dynamics. And while it does show the flaws in the other heroes, I find again that the flaws are developed from the same initial resonant perspective (basically, the perspective one has of the world if they can feel the sympathetic nature in the way I described it, yes that narrows it down, but that's what makes it a focal point and keeps the consistency of my argument). In the past, I tried to write about this problem, but I found my explanations counter to both major sides and more difficult than the average internet goer might understand. I've tried to keep it simple here, and I've tried to not deter you or others from the show. I merely find joy in taking a critical attitude towards life.

Asmogan

TLDR: Over analyzing fictional story and over associating it with real life caused August to drop the manga/show.

Mystra

"You scored with your partner, she's a sweetie and she's fun" That didn't age well lol
