Yea Dr. Nakabachi is just a pathetic human being in my opinion.The moment when Kurisu gave her life to save him because he is her father really made my tear up, and after all that that asshole just steals her research without a second thought and runs.

In episode 1 you can hear Okabe scream from this episode after he stabs Kurisu

Such a good show. The reason he needs to trick himself is so that he sends the first D-Mail saying she was stabbed, which triggers what happens in the rest of the show. If he simply saved her then everything that happened in the alpha worldline wouldn't have happened. You should watch episode 1 again to see all of the clues that are sprinkled throughout that come full circle.
