The trippy colors can be attributed to the animation studio being shaft. They're the absolute best in creating this kind of atmosphere and making shows that are amzing to look at. The main series other Madoka that is generally mentioned when talking about shaft is the monogatari series. I look forward to the day when we finally watch that.

Okay, this isn't a spoiler or anything. They only partly explain this in the show, but when a girl makes a wish and becomes a magical girl she gets a particular power. Mami's is, specifically, is control over ribbons. All those guns she uses are made of her ribbons. You also see it when she saves the girl from falling, when her bullets sprout up to bitchslap the witch, and when her actual ribbon turned into Tiro Finale. They never actually clarify in the show that that's her power, but I figured it would give some insight as to her capabilities. Also, you know that feeling when you're listening to, say, Another One Bites The Dust (hell, damn near any song by Queen really) for example, where it starts off kinda even, but then it really kicks in and you have no choice but to start singing along? Yeah, we're getting to the anime equivalent of that point. By the end of this you'll understand why it's so highly rated.
