Kenny wanting to get stronger is a big change. His whole focus had been getting weaker and making himself easier to fight. So suddenly wanting to become more powerful is a pretty extreme change.

You misheard something toward the end. When they were talking about a captain being killed, they were talking about Aizen (Clark Kent) (The guy pinned to the wall) and not Kenpachi.(Spike).

Just as a reminder, there are 80 districts surrounding the seireitei where the soul reapers live. The higher the district's number, the lower the standard of living. Renji and Rukia were from the 78th district, the slums. As you saw, the 79th and 80th districts (where Pinky and Spike were from)were completely removed from any semblance of order.

This was actually the first bit of Bleach I ever saw. I remember watching Kenpachi fall and it gave me shivers. I decided I had to start the series and see what it was all about

It seems like the VA of Jiraiya has some bad luck huh? Has a theme of dying. RIP Kenpachi. Also Ichiru means a ray or silver of hope. How fitting that is for this episode.

So, a soul (in this case, a Soul Reaper) that dies in Soul Society is reincarnated in the human world as a new person with no past or memories of their former life. You might as well have ceased to exist, as you're no longer you. And I can't remember or it might not ever have been clear, but I think you're reincarnated as someone's baby as well. So it's completely a new existence from the start. You neither have memories of your old life, nor your new one. Kinda like Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho, except without the memories. After all, memories is what makes us who we are. Not so much in past sense, but memories as they happened are what shaped our lives. In many ways. Oh dear, I apologize, I went on for a bit there.
