definitely a departure from his previous work but that’s the reason I liked this movie, good setup and excellent payoff.

The ending of your name gets me everytime. Now that I read that sentence it kind of sounds weird.

My first weekend in highschool (I went to highschool in Japan) my roommate and some of his friends went to see some movie and I asked if I could join. We ended up seeing "your name" the week it came out in the country side area that the movies country side is based on. All of this was blind on my part and I didnt really know japanese yet but it was a great memory and exprience I cherish.

Sounds about right! People loved it. It's on my list to get to. What I understand to be an equivalent movie to "Your Name" is "A Silent Voice". Got crazy good ratings, just like Your Name. The feels hit you like a wall. I watched it recently. It shook me a bit for a day or two. I highly recommend that movie too (for what that's worth!) It's basically about a deaf girl, her bullies, then both parties growing up and trying to reconcile differences with each other and trying to communicate. Glad you loved Your Name.

A Silent Voice became my favorite anime film after I watched it. I highly recommend it.

Right!? it was so good. Makoto Shinkai is a great film maker. I can't wait until Weathering With You is available.

That’s a great movie. You REALLY need to see Spirited Away though. It’s the #1 movie from ghibli(who also did Princess Mononoke, castle in the sky, Howls moving castle). Many consider it the best anime movie of alltime. NYT called it the 2nd “best movie of the 21st century” and 4th of the 21st century by film critics

It's one of those movies that definitely lived up to the hype for me. (And I kind of expected it not to-- EVERYONE was just praising it so much...) A Silent Voice is the next one I'd recommend, if you haven't seen it already. I know we've already talked about Anthem of the Heart. And Paprika's a good one too. Oh, Happy Easter, by the way!
