In addition to the prelaunch check up to ensure that the rocket wouldn't explode with his students on board, Korosensei was forced to save them on reentry as well. The parachutes had been impropery packed, and tangled up on deployment. Which would've led to them making a considerable freefall with nothing to slow them down if not for a multi-armed teacher with a penchant for untying knots AND a strong desire to have students not reduced to smoothies by the impact. Lets be clear, if there is any halfway plausible chance of koro-sensei blowing up the planet, he should be assassinated. Leaving a one in a million chance of the destruction of the planet would be a problem and this is much higher than that.
