Schools are a bit different in Japan, and it's not unusual for schools to ban students from having part time jobs. Particularly since this one is supposed to be a super strict, high level school, if students have time for a jobs, they have time for studying harder. Maybe if Isogai were in A-class, it might not have been a problem, but given he's in E, it's easy for the school to justify it. "See, he was so busy with working, he let his grades slip. Clearly, it was the right move to ban such things."

Can we appreciate the fact that we had an entire episode about sports without a single person doing a naruto-run ? Also the bread-eating contest would have been the perfect time for the french exchange student, not some pole game.

While it is clear that the principal is a shit bag of the highest magnitude. Lets atleast give him that he didnt kick the shit out of the "Exchange Students" (Those guys were somewhere between pro athletes and jojo's characters) to make himself look cool. He did it to teach a lesson in a poignant way. The lesson itself wasnt even bad, just given in a sociopathic way. He was basically saying that what you are supposed to do with defeat is to use it to make yourself stronger and he then gave a fairly direct example with his karate master. Based on his example, the "exchange students" should come back, study the principal for a day and then kick the shit out of him, that would be them taking his lesson to heart.

A post-script on the whole part-time jobs thing. On top of the emphasis on studying, it's also largely a "face" thing. It's seen as reflecting badly on the school somehow.

I don't really like that they use Hannibal, since he could win battles, but didn't really do anything with the wins. A better example, in my opinion is Nobunaga Oda, who defeated the Imagawa by using rain and knowledge of terrain to overpower Imagawa's army. Nobunaga was very much outnumbered and many of his vassals advised surrender, but he said "nah mah dudes, I got dis." He not only defeated the Imagawa, but also killed their leader and from then on, became the man closest to reunifying Japan. Truth be told, had he not been betrayed by his vassal, Mitsuhide, he probably would have unified Japan.
