Its worth remembering that guts has been training for a year and has a bit more battle experience since he became the hundred man slayer. So he is stronger than back then.

Griffith can't speak and can't move his hands or feet, only his arms and legs. He has fallen pretty far from being one of the best swordfighters, most eloquent talkers and most beautiful men of the world. Hell, his mind has probably eroded to some degree, from spending his time in either searing pain or silence and shadow all the time.

Okay time cover some things from the Manga. 1. The Princess originally came with them largely because of her love for Griffith. Turns out that the reason daddy had such a hard-on for having Griffith tortured is because he wanted her for himself. (Apparently she looks just like her mother, break out the banjo music). There was a huge fight in the passageways with some Arab-esque assassins hired by the king to retrieve the princess. She agreed to return to the king in exchange for the lives of Griffith and the rest of the Hawks. He of course went back on his word. 2. The monsters you see slaughtering the Hawks' wounded. Are all Easter eggs from the Manga. Opponents he would fight later on in the Manga. Much like the snake monster in the first episode. Clearly the creators were hoping to do some foreshadowing in case the series was ever continued. Of course it never really was. Also Ricket survives that encounter, the only member of that group who does. 3. The helmet they have Griffith in was largely inspired by an old movie called The Phantom of the Paradise. Where the main character, similarly disfigured wears a similar mask.
