You're right, Curtis. Guts isn't leaving in a resentful way. This all goes back to the speech that Griffith gave to the princess about the band of the hawk being his friends. I think Griffith said that any friend of his would have his own dream to achieve, which is what Guts is doing. That speech had an effect on Guts.

I forgot how pretty the snow scenes were in this episode. They did a great job capturing the somber tone as Guts leaves
