The music really helps make this series. But yes, Hiei's backstory is fantastic. It does cause some minor plotholes, but it's worth it.

can you believe that Hiei was originally only meant to be a one arc villain? he proved popular enough that they made him one of the main characters, yu yu hakusho was originally meant to be very different from the action series it became, in fact in the manga there's several stories that were left out of the anime from the start when yusuke was dead

oh yeah Curtis, are you going to see the two ova's for yu yu hakusho? there's one from 2018 that shows how Hiei and Kurama met

What they don't mention in the anime is that she was born a sex slave and was abused for many years. She escaped and earned her freedom, but it cost her half her body. When the anime covers her backstory it is a very watered down version of how it was in the manga omitting many details of her time as a sex slave, going into detail how messed up her life truly was, when you get that far in the anime I'll tell what happens in the manga.

I never got to see this arc as a kid, so it's good stuff. You get a good feel for Hiei; he probably wants to be part of the group / be closer friends than he'll ever let on. Just nothing in his life has taught him how. Chuck Huber is also my vote for most improved actor in the cast. He was a little shaky before the Dark Tournament, especially his first appearance (maybe because the character was so different?) but he's crushing it now. Great actor.

I fuckin love Hiei so yes I thought this episode was awesome I did love his backstory too the one part about being too bad for the bandits reminds me of this game I was playing as an evil character then I kept extorting the bad guys for more money and it locked them as enemies when they got pissed and attacked me and all the civilian people were all thanking me later and I'm thinking if I'd had my way your planet would've burned

His backstory is part of the reason that growing up reading the Manga. Hiei was one of my favourite characters in the whole series. Next to Kurama anyways. Hell, Yusuke and Kuwabara really didn't even register back when I was thirteen/fourteen.

They don't explain in the anime that she was literally born a sex slave, they watered it down here. The reason she is so heavily scarred was because she got ahold of acid, and poured it on herself so she would no longer be attractive to her owner at the time, which worked, and she was released.
