To say the least, Toguro was a very complex character. While he did some pretty unforgivable stuff, his backstory certainly created some sympathetic feelings for me.

I HAVE SOME EMPATHY FOR TOGURO NOW, BUT IM REALLY GLAD GENKAI IS BACK! - Yu Yu Hakusho #66

Interesting is a great word to describe Toguro.

Anonymous

It was the team's collective wish to have Genkai brought back and so Koenma took it upon himself to grant the wish since the Dark Tournament committee was dead.

Miklar Sihn

Well, toguro made sure that koenma knew what the wish was and to make sure he set it up.

Anonymous

So Toguro was training people that got killed by a monster that forced Toguro to train & knowing this monster would be in the tournament he entered & realized his true power & wanted more, changing his original plan to only enter to win only ever lasting life?

Brother E

Now onto the next villain!

Chris

“No Genkai, but it would’ve been a beautiful life.” 😢

Anonymous

secretly I did know that Genkai would be back because I remember yusuke doing more training with her. Yet I never did know till now how she would come back with no wish from the tournament.

Toguro really was a mentor to Yusuke, basically helped him to realize his potential. At the beginning he stopped a punch cuz the shockwave could have killed Keiko and the others in the stands, he faked Kuwabara's killing to make Yusuke angry, said lot's of interesting things like how fear is strenght not weakness. This guy is the most complex anti hero in the anime world, the other one is.. well, i don't want to say it just yet.

I really liked togouro. He wasn't perfect but he did have honor as a fighter. I think of him as a warped mix of Goku and Hisoka, hed try anything to fight opponents but wouldn't kill u if u were to weak or not a contract. Plus he took his punishment as a man

Anonymous

Also i believe they explian in the show early and the manga(i could b wrong here guys) the time in the spirit world is diffrent than real life, so toguros 10,000 years in purgatory are actually around 10 million. Oof 😥 even if it is 10000 thats still along time.

Ryan Gillatt

Toguro-just a normal man with wounded heart... and a broken dream. -man, it just feels so deep, and in a way it’s very simple.

Anonymous

From what I can tell, glass on = his persona, and glasses off = his real self.

GoldArthur

They just don't make villains like Yu Yu Hakusho anymore. With the exception of all the earliest ones, the villains from this series are all very complex, and unique.

Anonymous

Very glad we got Granny GILF back!

Anonymous

Very cool to see yuske get over that wall of crap.

I love how Curtis said ”oh brother” when the narrator was talking about a new threat.

Anonymous

Damn Curtis talked over the best line. "No Genkai, but it would have been a beautiful life"

Gotta hand it to Toguro though, he didn't back away from what he thought was his just deserts. He was originally going to get a light sentence. (Well as light as a level of hell could be). Instead he goes for the what sounds like the absolute worst. Kind of makes me wish Genkai could've convinced him otherwise. I mean I don't hate him as much as his brother so I don't think he truly deserves the harshest sentence possible.

Daniel Gonzalez

Toguro was a man's man tho couldn't forgive himself for the death of his students became a demon really became a demon acting like it didnt take no slander of genkai even from his brother and avoided kuwabaras vitals on purpose but he knew he was an asshole so he punished himself for it even him saying he loved the power was just a cover so genkai wouldn't feel sorry for him he's definitely one of my favorite antagonists

August B Denys

So, besides the animation being above standard for a warp up episode, I have a theory on Toguro. Kyren, the demon that killed Toguro's students, was said to be a strong demon from a lost time, and when Toguro won the Dark Tournament he asked to become the highest class of demon. Well, Kyren was the model for that type of demon. Perhaps it was not him wanting not to age, not wanting to be evil, but perhaps if he became the strongest demon possible to prevent any future massacres. And the reason he doesn't disappear or commit suicide is because he would just leave a vacuum of power that another would enter. So, in comes Yusuke with the power not only to defeat him, but to make sure no demon like him could ever kill like Kyren in the past did. Perhaps Yusuke wasn't his only attempt at this. There was Bui, who he let live, and the Beautiful Suzuki, who became a craftsman able to make others stronger. So, in light of his being a fool with a big heart, he did the only thing to do to save people, since he didn't care to kill noncombatants, he became a pillar for somebody righteous to overcome. But that's just a theory.

That's interesting and amazing... haven't thought about that !

It won't let me open the video V.V

Video wont load for me.

Finally loaded it through browser, app wouldn't work x.x. But yeah my take on toguro is he is a broken old-school protag. Like fist of the north star, what makes them special is they never lose hope and keep pushing their ideals, but toguro lost hope. He couldn't be the strongest while human, he viewed his humanity as the weakness that allowed his protoges to die and him to lose, so he gave it up... But at the end he still wanted his dream to be true, he wanted someone who could protect things other than just themselves and not get beaten by beings like him and kyren who gave up everything for pure strength.

DevilJynx

Torguro is one of the most well developed antagonists in Manga/Anime history. You cannot help but like him to an extent, despite his coldness(which was a facade for the most part) He killed the slimey comittee(which even Sakyo despised), he killed his elder brother for disrespecting Genkai, intentionally did not kill Kuwabara, and knew once Yusuke won, Genkai would be brought back to life. He planned to lose and die as a means of atonement for his crimes as a demon and for failing to protect his students.

Anonymous

I hated him at first but now i like him and he is really interesting villain. and i don't know if i can even call him a villain :)

TheLurker

it's not that he doesn't want to admit his emotions I've always believed that being human again he was overcome with repentance and didn't want genkai to see him as the human he was instead he wanted her to see the monster he had resolved to kill in her final moments to free of the remorse she confronts him with in front of limbo

Anonymous

Did Toguro really do anything that bad? He killed a bunch of messed up demons, an extremely corrupt group of super rich criminals and he killed Genkai who almost seemed to want to die to unleash her students potential and on top of that purposely missed the vitals of Kuwabara to break open Yusuke's wall.

Anonymous

that, and also him wanting to suffer in a demon's body, turning in to what he felt himself to be in the months of solitude, giving in to the everlasting youth to maintain his strength, and never be vulnerable again. it's real complexed lol

Now that the tournament is over lets look at the overall stats; Genkai - Participated in 2 of the 5 rounds, fought 3 times and won each of her fights. Kuwabara - Participated in all 5 rounds (Only character to do so), fought 6 times only winning 3 of his fights. Kurama - Participated in 4 of the 5 rounds, fought 5 times only winning 3 out of the 5 fights (Same amount of wins as Kuwabara and Genkai) Hiei - Participated in 3 of the 5 rounds, fought 4 times and never lost a match. Yusuke - Participated in 4 of the 5 rounds, fought 5 times, won 4 out of the 5 fights (only loss was the double loss between him and Gin) Koenma - Substitute for Genkai, only participated in 1 round and bet his match on Yuske's win so technically won his only match. Given the results it's hard to pick out an MVP, Kuwabara put in the most work but lost the most even though he won as much as Genkai and Kurama, Hiei and Genkai never lost a fight but didn't fight as much the other characters, Hiei fought one more fight than Genkai giving him an extra win and Yusuke's only loss was due to him being screwed over. If I had to choose it would be between Hiei and Yusuke (Sorry Kurama you're still my favorite). What do you guys think?

SpazBoysComedy

Cool breakdown!... I like the fact that, even though his W-L record wasn't stellar, Big Ginger was clearly the grinder of the group. :-)

Anonymous

i also like how even though they couldnt always count on hiei to be able to fight in every round, when he did he always solidifies himself as a complete badass who never lost any of his matches. i really like hiei

So I'm gonna be the guy who says an unpopular opinion, so here it goes: I don't think Genkai should have been brought back to life. While it gives the heroes a happy end to an amazing arc, I feel it would have been better for Yusuke and the others to learn from her death strengthen their resolve to get stronger and never let someone they care about die again. It sounds cliche yeah, but having her back just doesn't sit well with me. Ok, I've finished my ramblings now.
