The best thing about One Piece characters, and specially the crewmembers on the Straw Hats, is that you could have a separate anime just with that character as a main character. The writing is so deep and you can understand their personality based on their backstory. At first you think of Nami as someone who is obsessed with treasure, but now you know the real reason why she so desperately wants to get more money and why she despises pirates.

Captain Nezumi is appropriately named. He resembles a rat, his personality is that of a rat, and Nezumi in Japanese can be translated as mouse or rat. Like I said earlier, this is the arc that if you don't like One Piece by now then stop watching because if this doesn't pull you right in . . . nothing will. One Piece is just so good with hitting you with the feels. Sad feels, happy feels, angry feels, homicidal feels. If it's a feeling you feel it.

Here's the thing with One Piece: you do tend to find out the backstories of villains, either directly or through world-building, but despite this they tend to stay pretty villainous. The idea that historical context somehow justifies or minimizes current misdeeds isn't really a thing. A character can simultaneously be a tragic victim and an evil bastard. It's part of what makes One Piece more complex, and more interesting.

I am sure that windmill will be important in the story. When the crew finally ends their current goal they will find a door that needs the windmill and have to travel back. That will be the halfway point of the series.

lmao butt fucked as a child or whatever, well put Curtis. Fuck him. And the pirate's thing, yeah he's a pirate but so is Luffy and Luffy a good guy. Mihawk also technically a pirate, but as you've seen he's honourable. Heck, even Don Krieg wasn't this evil.

i'd say that similar to real life, one piece makes back stories where the vilains actions/motivations/beliefs are understandable but not necessarily forgivable. as in, i can see myself in that person's shoes doing the same or worse(not all the time)

Arlong does have a backstory so I think you'll find it interesting to see how Arlong got the way he did and his and Fishmen history, but yeah, even knowing that there's no way to not hate him with all your guts haha

Honestly, arlong is bad but dont hate all fishman. There are a few good ones we eventually see. Just a few tho. And just you wait, there are people who you'll hate even more than arlong

There is one thing I've always found interesting about Arlong. From how he interacts with his crew we can see that he really does care about them, unlike for example Kuro and Don Krieg. This means that he clearly has capacity for empathy. In other words, if not for his extreme racism (specieism?) he might actually have been a somewhat decent guy and not this complete monster he is here.

That reminds me it's up to you how you want to handle it but be careful with some of the episode titles for one piece since they generally tell you the major events of the episode so it may be spoilerish if you aren't careful, but again it's up to you how you want to handle it.

Remember, folks, Curtis is watching the series for the first time. He doesnt know what comes later. So, anything having to do with certain groups of people that comes waaaay later? Thats not something hes going to see for a while. Be patient, and try not to spoil anything.

The comparison to Chimera Ants is both off but also very on. As you can see these guys are quite human (aside from being dicks). But the thing that is exactly the same is that they are physically superior to humans thanks to being part animal

But to be even more fair we already know of the existence of at least one other fishman, Jinbei, who was said to be one of the seven warlords like Mihawk. They also said in the village when the pirates came "the fishman pirates split up", and the fact that they are called the fishmen pirates and not just fishmen should mean others exist. Maybe🤔 Likely you meant we dont know if others will be relevant to the story? But I cant crack fun if I try to take you seriously so...

No, I likely meant exactly what I said. I don't know if Fishmen exist in any capacity other than as pirates who despise humans. If I discover there is more to them than that, cool... I'm not sure why the notion that the only Fishmen in existence would be those on this island, considering there is no prior information on "Fish Men" anywhere that I know of... My feeling was that they were some sort of mutated society that came together in this relatively small number. Apologies if I missed clues otherwise.

Oh, Im not serious:) They did mention the fishman warlord though, so at the very least one more Yeah that would make sense, its possible they mutated in small numbers. If every last one of them is pirates though, man can they not have the best image!

One Piece is well over 800 episodes and the manga is over 900 chapters and this is STILL one of the top 5 saddest moments. Seen this episode so many times and I still cry every time... One Piece, man.. you sign up for a goofy pirate adventure with a boy made of rubber and end up with that rubber boy suckerpunching you with a bowl of chopped onions every other episode.

For a kids cartoon and manga, One Piece never pulls its punches and always seems to follow two major rules. If you are a Major Character not named Luffy then you will have a tragic background. If you are a genuinely nice person who can't kill giants with a single blow you are always going to get boned until you meet Luffy. It never fails.
