I don't necessarily think it's that the beginning of One Piece is slow, moreso that the beginning is much smaller, in terms of effect to the One Piece world, than the huge, world-defining events the come later

The pacing of the anime is always slow, the east blue saga isn't really slow in the manga.

An easy way for me to remember Usopps name in the beginning was learning the origin. The boy who cried wolf is one of the childrens "aesops fables" and the japanese word for lie/liar is "uso" Mix the two together and you get Usopp. Plus the long nose like Pinocchio. He's destined to be a liar. :D

You might not have remembered at the moment but when Luffy said "Now that you've drawn your pistol, put your life on the line " was a direct reference to Shanks line when Luffy was a kid. When those bandits held a gun to Shanks's head. Epic.
