I’m sorry but I must be watching Naruto instead of Dragon Ball because I don’t ever remember Dragon Ball having so many long winded flashbacks as this episode had.

yeah a lot of anime uses flashbacks like you've seen with Naruto, it's mostly cost cutting by re-using animation, but it's usually only at the start of an episode, expect to see a lot of this in one piece but at a much larger amount, it's not a joke to say the beginning of every one piece episode eventually turns into 4 minutes of recap of the previous ones.

I hadn't ever considered it. This has been the way the schedule has been all along, and I'm not sure why we would randomly make a change?

monaka is my favorite in all of Dragon ball, He's super silent at the start but he really opens up and is just such a cool character

I'm sure part of the reason for the recaps this episode is because they knew people that had seen the movies might skip past the first two arcs, so they threw in a bit of a refresher for those people. Also, the series had some serious scheduling issues in the beginning. Toei didn't give them nearly enough time to prepare before they had to start churning out episodes, which is why a very significant portion of the series is not visually up to par, but they do recover eventually. Having an episode that was mostly old footage likely helped in that process.

This is Dragon Ball, the flashbacks are a few levels above Naruto's.
