This backstory has to be up there with the freakiest of all of them in any anime! Now that I understand why there is a Hohenheim, as well as a "Father" Hohenheim doppelganger, I'm WAY more freaked out than I was when I didn't understand!

this is one of my favorite episodes of FMAB. to answer your question about pride i think what pride was saying is hes the first created from fathers philosopher stone.

Remember Curtis that anime is (most commonly) adapted from manga. Manga (most commonly) is planned and drawn by one single person. How incredible is that! Naruto, FMAB and HxH thought up and drawn by a single person each!

Fun fact! The voice actor for young Hohenheim was the original Alphonse, in the 2003 anime. He was only 12 when he voiced Al. But then, ya know, puberty happened. I think it's cool he still got a role in FMAB. Love this episode!! I was just as entranced as you were.

Father was the first homonculus. But youre probably right about him not considering himself one anymore. Selim was the first Homonculus made by father. You can consider him the first of the homonculus "made by father" or the first of the ones we know, the group of sins. But guess Pride might be a bit prideful about that :P

Armstrong's acting skills are on point

IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! Got to hear it twice this time! Love it.

Xerxes was the kingdom that ed visited a while ago (when the whole mustang killed Ross thing happened) they also said that Xingese Alkahestry was brought into the land by a western sage with blond eyes and hair btw ;) Fun fact: Xerxes had about 1 million inhabitants so there are about 500 thousand souls in Hohenheim rn. Compare that to the stones that Kimblee is carrying which probably consist of about 20-50 souls, and you can guess how strong Hohenheim could be. Father has split the souls in him into pieces to create the Homunculi, and he created pride first, that’s why he calls himself the first one. Father technically is a giant stone like Hohenheim, but I guess pride and the others don’t even know what he was or what he is exactly. He doesn’t seem to be the most honest and caring guy. Poor Hohenheim through. He’s easily the most tragic character in the whole show. He’s born a slave, was forced into a weird experiment, gets manipulated his whole mortal life, has to witness his whole country including all of his friends and his master getting murdered and then he has to listen to all the 500 thousand angry and confused souls within him who probably scream all day. And that’s not even counting that he had children and a wife and he knew the whole time that he would outlive them. Then his wife dies while he’s away worrying what the sick bastard who stole his form and practically committed genocide of his people does. And on top of all that his son hates him. (Ed has all reason to, but still) yeah. Sorry for the giant comment but Hohenheim is one of my favorite characters :)

WOW! Great breakdown! Yea, I definitely didn't expect to end up feeling the compassion for Hohenheim that I do when he was first discussed. :-)

The turning point

Father needs Al and Ed, he wouldn't do anything to hurt them

Curtis, Father's little board game has nothing to do with al seeing his body at the gate His blood seal is just reaching its expiration date. Father doesnt want to speed it up because he still needs him as one of the 5 sacrifice for his nationwide transmutaion circle

You're somewhat incorrect on that point. Mangaka have a lot of help when drawing Manga. Most of them (save a select few) have assistants who help in a variety of ways. In fact many Mangaka start out as assistants to other Mangaka. Also Editors often have a hand in the writing process, some of the best are crucial in that they suggest changes that the original writers never thought of. Thus contributing greatly to the final product that we all know and love. Hiromu Arakawa the Mangaka for Fullmetal Alchemist has mentioned both her assistants and editor in post-story comics in her Manga. Often expressing thanks for their contributions to her work.

Now Hohenheim's "that bastard" comment from a few episodes ago should make a bit more sense.

GoldArthur

Selim just means that he was the first homunculus created by Father.

I think the most tragic thing about Hohenheim isn't the fact that he was manipulated into killing an entire country filled with his friends, but the fact that when he was freed from being a slave the first thing he said he was looking forward to was having a family, which he did finally get, but he knew he would out live them all, see them die before him, making him feel guilty for showing love to his sons, all because of Father's greed.

10:06 - That's what I call reacting.

Hey man dont feel bad when you arent saying anything. Facial expressions are still reactions

As I said way back, daddy is a fascinating character and it's interesting to see how your opinion of him evolves as you learn more about him.

What's does Hoenheim and Michael Jordan have in common? They're both slave #23!

Don't worry about not saying anything. Being stunned by a revelation is a reaction too.

The name the dwarf in the flask said "philippus theophrastus bombastus" is a real alchemist in the 1400's considered the father of alchemy and also rumored to have created a homunculus.. this is real shit..
