Whoa, that's really unfortunate! And judging from Maomao's expression, she's not a big fan of her biological paternity!

Courtesans reaching retirement age in their late 20's wouldn't be that unusual for this time period, as the average life expectancy for the time was probably only in the late 30's (granted, this is in large part due to high mortality in children). Quality nutrition, hygiene and medicine were all terrible compared to today. Even the average lifespan of Emperors in Ancient China was around age 40.

I've been waiting for this moment, they've hinted at Maomao and Lakan connection for a while now, but it's a great reveal, the two of them are very... similar, they're both eccentric mad geniuses who have their obsessions, and are a little... warped when interacting with others, Maomao's expression in the picture above is amazingly intense, seeing it for a split second in the anime is a really interesting interpretation, it weirdly leaves a strong impact, the manga version is a still image obviously, so you're left to linger on it in comparison, it's also a little more unreadable.

A medicine to resurrect the dead, Maomao clearly hasn't seen Fullmetal Alchemist or Frankenstein. Otherwise she'd know that never turns out well.
