Ancient times were rough, if a town/city didn't have enough women they'd raid a nearby town and steal the women, that's how Rome got started. Women taking actions to make themselves less of a target makes sense. The modern version would be not taking drinks from strangers at a party. Also, it feels like the general staff at the palace seems a bit too lacking in skill. The eunuch doctor aside, would the emperor's seamstress really need to ask MaoMao how to sew pockets to hold warm stones? I feel I could do it (sloppily) just by looking at it and my sewing skills consists or repairing minor rips in clothes.

it's really not that uncommon to ask someone how they went about doing something in crafts, she probably went to find out the best place to sew it, to not burn someone, and spread warmth properly, plus a lot of sewing techniques weren't known back then.

the time period Maomao lives in is pretty twisted... why Maomao wears freckles is a pretty shocking reveal, but it makes sense unfortunately... there are people like that... there's always an element of cruelty and darkness in this series, Maomao would like to go home, but in ways she's definitely better off in the palace, even if it basically a gilded cage. on a... less depressing note, I should probably mention now that Maomao is voiced by Aoi Yuki, you'll recognize her from a lot of things, but off the top of my head, Tanya Degurechaff from Tanya the Saga of Evil, and Tatsumaki from One Punch Man, she has a wonderful voice, and it's really recognizable.
