It's absolutely amazing how well told all these different stories of relationship were displayed! I absolutely LOVE this show!

Frieren wasn't unfairly failed, Frieren said herself that Serie never makes bad judgements (she had no choice but to pass Fern who is a prodigy). When it came to Frieren failing, it's more a difference in ideology, Frieren (having the long lifetime of an elf) has plenty of time to do things that don't progress her magic (collecting random folk magic spells, taking her time exploring dungeons and collecting junk etc). Serie feels that first class mages basically need to either have exceptional talent like Fern or have extreme mindsets and a will to succeed like the others that passed. Whether that's a correct judgement or not is a different matter (Serie has her own issues as well). IMO Land is definitely the most impressive one out of the bunch, being able to do all the first class mage exam requirements with just his clones while he chills at home is exactly what a first class mage would do if they could hehe. It's also why Ubel is having a hard time figuring him out so she can copy his magic, as she still hasn't realized she's only been talking to clones. Lots of funny fan comics about Land and Ubel.

The "unfairness" is in her being judged by something other than her abilities as a first class mage. Ideological differences as a means of pass or fail in such a situation could absolutely be deemed unfair... I didn't have any trouble understanding why Serie did it - and as long as Fern made first class it doesn't really matter for the group - but I made the comment about unfairness, as it clearly is.

It’s funny how Wirbel is self aware of the fact that everyone initially perceives him to be ruthless & a “kick a puppy” kinda guy. Wirbel is principled enough that he could very well become the next Himmel.

Yea, Frieren did call Serie childish, part of that is her being stubborn about doing things her own way (such as not telling her students her true feelings). It's also funny because Frieren is also very childish (always sleeping in late, and want to waste years in one location doing random stuff) always causing Fern to be frustrated with her. The two strongest mages are both basically kids in terms of mindset heh.

I kinda feel like Serie doesn't tell her students that they actually mean something to her because she wants to lie to herself. After all, she will inevitably lose them in the end. Hell, the only one she's been shown to open up to is Frieren, another elf. What i think she really wanted was Frieren to share her ideals and stick around, but Frieren is Frieren, and Serie is a child. Unfortunately that leads to people like Lernen getting stupid ideas like trying to kill Frieren so that Serie would have someone else to remember. Awkward indeed.

I don't know why, but the revelation that Land didn't even set foot on the testing grounds this whole time impresses me. Made me kinda like him more for some reason. How much power does he have to have to be able to project his clones across long distances and maintain them? And he can do it over and over when they get killed/destroyed. Other than that, I wonder what's in store for our elven mage and her party. I'm looking forward to the next season like everyone else.

I've started asking myself "What would Himmel do?" when it comes to deciding to help someone. This is a great story about how no matter how brief your meeting with someone is, it can impact many lives even after you die. It's a beautiful thought that you carry a piece of everyone and everything you come across with you, just like they take a piece of you with them. It makes our existence feel a lot less temporary knowing your influence can carry on to others even after you're gone. It doesn't have to be grand (like defeating a Demon King) to make that impact. It can be helping someone carry their groceries, or making a kid laugh when they're crying or any other "insignificant" ways. I think the world would be a much better place if, instead of thinking we need more people like Himmel, we would all try to BE the people that are like Himmel. This show came out of nowhere and landed on my Top 5 with ease! Glad you and your wife are enjoying it! Has it gotten some tears out of her yet?

I feel like Serie desperately wants a successor to leave her legacy to. She's been around longer than frieren, probably longer than Kraft. But she can't help herself from taking in promising young humans, fully knowing they won't last long enough to surpass her. In an odd way, her caring for humans is way stronger than you'd expect. Logistically, she should have found an elf mage and accepted compromises. If she could teach flamme, she could teach others she disagreed with. But she doesn't. It's interesting. I hope she's not a one arc character. She's fascinating to me.

Frieren is honestly one of my favourite newer manga series, the only other new series I think is currently on its level is The Apothecary Diaries which also has a very... "eccentric" female protagonist. Frieren and the rest of the cast are just so likeable and fun to watch. We probably won't see season 2 for a little while unfortunately (I'm so glad I read the manga), season 1 covers the first 60 chapters, which takes it up to a little into volume 7, the manga is up to volume 13 now, it's gone on hiatus for over a month now but hopefully will be back soon.
