oh this episode was definitely messed up, I know Batman TAS can be a bit darker at times, but I'm still surprised Fox let them air such a dark concept for a kids show, Poison Ivy going crazy from not being able to raise a family... it's pretty twisted, but makes for a fantastic episode. OK, so I'm going to let you know something, this isn't actually revealed in the animated series itself, but part of the comics made for the show that are canon to this animated version. This is actually Ivy's last real appearance in the series, she did leave Gotham for good after this episode, and any time we see Poison Ivy after this is just a plant based clone she made to keep Harley company and keep Batman off her trail. The real Poison Ivy reformed after this and is living a normal life with Dr. Alec Holland who she married (you haven't met him, he's the superhero Swamp Thing in DC comics), so she was being somewhat genuine about wanting to live a normal life, it just took time for the right person to pull her back from the edge.

In the comics, her body is a self-contained little hyper-immunity system, so she can't get pregnant. You could see why toxin immunity and enhanced strength would be useful for Ivy and Harley.
