I haven't even caught up to the latest season, though I did read a lot of the light novels, but what I've found interesting is that the more Ains is an undead, the less like a human he thinks. Whenever he feels any particular strong human emotion, he is also forcibly calmed down. We saw him save a village at the start of the series, but he's slowly become more cold and detached. I wonder what the author is trying to say with that. I've never really thought much about it.

He's been like that since the very start if you think about it. He felt nothing seeing the attack on Carne village and was fully prepared to let them all die until he looked at Sebas and remembered Touch Me. It's not a change in his thinking, it's more of a change in his priorities. At first his main goal was to find any other players, and since he hoping to have a friendly relationship he tried to avoid doing things that may upset a "good" player. But since Shalltear was mind controlled he's been more paranoid, views other players as potential enemies, and is more willing to do bad things if they'll benefit Nazarick. It also seems like he's been gradually losing faith that he'll find his guildmates, so he's trying extra hard to protect Nazarick and the NPCs, since they're all he has left.

I personally like the way Ains and the story in general goes bc nazarik are not good guys, never have been. It's a power fantasy sort of for evil but not entirely since momonga plays the role of a lich lord and thus acts accordingly. However the most interesting part, at least to me, is how they shape and interact with the politics of this world.
