I tried a lot of things to see if I could create an atmosphere that matched live-action background images and anime characters.

This is Unity's GameView scene.

In the case of matching a live-action background, the first thing to do is to match the brightness. There are two possible ways to do this: "match the character to the brightness of the background" or "match the background to the brightness of the character.

A screen where characters and backgrounds are simply matched.

As it is, you can see that there is a difference in brightness. The character is brighter and the background is darker.

The first step is to decide which brightness you want to adjust. It's easier to adjust the brightness in black and white.

Adjust the brightness of the character to match the background.

Right: Adjusting the brightness of the background

Just by adjusting the brightness, you can harmonize the character with the background. In this case, I went with the left taste (matching the character to the background). From here, we will make fine adjustments.

It is easier to see the brightness in black and white, so I adjust the image while looking at it in black and white. It's hard to tell at a glance, but I made minor adjustments to the saturation, contrast, and light source to blend in with the background.

One more thing.

Here's another scene I tried. This one is a test of match-move (matching the movement of the background image).

This one was adjusted using an editing software called DaVinci Resolve.

Match the alpha-edged character with the live-action image.

DaVinci Resolve's tracker feature makes it easy to matchmove.
