The Selection - Chapter 1 (Patreon)

Selection Day
As she walked down the hallway towards the auditorium, the beautiful girl could barely hear anything except for the squeak of her shoes and the shallow breaths she was taking. This was it... the time had come. Her name was Alice Jennings, and she had been waiting for this day for a long time. Or truthfully, she’d been doing so since the day she was created exactly 21 years ago.
Created, not born. After all, she was a clone. Just like everyone else. Tweaks were made to their individual splices of genes and DNA so that everyone still looked moderately different, but actually giving birth to children the old fashioned way was so last century. In the year 3032 many things had changed.
Alice swiftly moved herself through the building knowing that if she took too much longer she was going to be late. She couldn’t bring herself to be late, as if a programming deep inside of her was forbidding her from doing such an act as if she was an automaton like the helpers that served as her family’s butlers. After all, today was the most important day of her life. She didn’t want to be late for the rest of her life.
As she passed by a mirror she saw her beautiful reflection. Long hair, big gorgeous eyes, and a smile that belonged in magazines. Her looks, like everyone in her community, had been slightly... manufactured to a degree. Besides the tweaks that she knew had been made to her DNA before she’d even popped out of a cloning tube, she had been outfitted with Nano-Technology from day one that would keep her body in perfect physical shape. Her quite strong yet slim form was incapable of gaining an unhealthy excess of fat, kept her body from developing any deadly diseases, and like everybody she knew, even her “parents”, the Nano-Technology inside of her would keep her looking young and beautiful for as long as she lived before she died of... “Old” age.
Alice turned the corner right by the “Wall of Greatness” – a wall where the boldest and brightest were smiling down at her, showing off all of the wonderful things they had done with their lives after their paths had been chosen on Selection Day. Alice couldn’t help but have a small grin on her sculpted face as she went by the wall. She was going to have her face on that wall one day if it was the last thing she did. She was, after all, the top of her class. No one else deserved it or had better means of doing so then she did.
As she walked, Alice started passing by more and more people who were also on their way to the auditorium. She heard giggles and nervous whispers as so many of her fellow 21 year old community members were discussing different selections that might be made for them. There were ones that people always wanted like actor, pilot, or singer. And then there was the... less desirable jobs to say the least.
“Hehehe I already know what you’re gonna get.” A girl whispered to her friend as Alice walked by. “You’re gonna get Slut!”
“Oh shut up Millie!” Her friend said, giggling in return though with a hint of newfound nervousness in her voice. “I hope you’re selected as Servant, then maybe I can get you to hush up for once.”
“Hehehe, yeah right, whatever. I hope I get Fashion Designer.”
Alice kept moving, her slightly heeled boots clicking against the floor with every step she took. As she drew closer and closer to the auditorium where her entire future awaited her.
As she entered the large room she could see hundreds of rows of chairs for the countless people who were the guests of honor in this year’s Selection Day. Once she and all of the other guests, as well as the parents watching on the sidelines had taken their seats. The ceremony could finally begin.
The Leader of their community, a woman named Angelina Aubernacky, gave a beautiful opening speech before starting the main event they were all here for - Selection Time.
Pulling out a large rectangular glass box filled with many and many slips of papers on them, Angelina and her assistants moved the box front and center on the stage next to the main podium and lit the ceremonial candle that could burn and last for hours and hours.
“Alright everyone,” Angelina said in a strong yet calm voice into the microphone. “The time has come for your Selections to be made. From this day forward your lives will forever be altered and you will be trained for the Selection that you make at random. Thank you all for being here and thank you for your dedication.” Angelina smiled and put a hand gesture across her chest and up to her forehead that all of them had known since they were young children.
“We are the Community,” She said.
“And for the Community.” Everyone in the auditorium said in response, while mirroring the hand gesture.
Angelina smiled, “Alright then. I officially decree that the Selection Day of the year 3032, now begin!”
