The Anonymous Package - Part 1 (Patreon)

Courtney’s life use to be quite different. She had everything that a normal girl her age could have. She had an excellent job, she had a college degree, she had her own apartment, and she was even looking forward to a possible promotion soon enough. Everything in her life seemed to be progressing just as she had always hoped it would.
Then... she received a package in the mail.
It didn’t have any stamps or postal markings, it just simply appeared on her doorstep one day. It had been a very normal day, nothing out of the ordinary for her. She had gotten a day off of work so she was using it to unwind a little bit. Dressing up in her comfy clothes and making herself a snack, she snuggled up on her couch underneath her fuzzy blanket and whipped out one of her favorite romance novels. She’d been sitting there on the couch for a couple of minutes when she heard the doorbell ring. She raised her eyebrows as she looked up from her book, she wasn’t expecting anyone. Putting her book down, Courtney walked to the front door and opened it up, but there was nobody there.
“Hello?” She called out, looking both ways as she took a small step outside the door. Nobody. She wasn’t sure people really did ding-dong ditches anymore, but she guessed kids would resort to anything when they were bored. “Okayyy...” She mumbled out a little nervously. She moved to go back inside when her foot hit something. Looking down she was a little surprise to find a package. Courtney reached down and picked the package up. It wasn’t very large or heavy, but it was decently sizable. It was wrapped up somewhat crudely with a red string bow wrapped around itself to keep the whole thing together. She turned it over a few times and saw that at least on the outside there was no indication on where or who it had come from at all. Courtney looked up from the anonymous package one more time to look up and down her street, but she saw no one at all in sight. Confused, but admittedly curious, she put the package under her arm and reentered her house with it, shutting the door behind her.
Setting the package down on the kitchen table she immediately went right to work opening it, her mind running wild with every possibility of what it could be. For every strange, weird, or even dangerous scenario her mind came up with, none of them were even close. Inside the wrapping paper was a sealed plastic bag with a zip lock top, and inside that... was a teddy bear. A very simple, and somewhat generic, but very cute white teddy bear. Wanting to get a closer look at the thing, Courtney opened the zip lock bag up and pulled the cute little bear out. She examined the thing from head to toe, as well as the bag it came in, but once again there were no markings on it anywhere to help figure out where it might have come from as well as nothing else at all in the bag. The bear itself didn’t even have a tag on it.
“Why would someone send me this?” Courtney mumbled aloud to herself, looking deeply into the bear’s small little black eyes. It didn’t make much sense. If she was a big stuffed animal person she could maybe excuse the fact that someone had sent her a strange anonymous one, but she wasn’t even big on stuffed animals, she didn’t really care for them. She found them kinda boring, and never knew really knew what to do with them even when she’d been a little girl. Though even she had to admit how soft this one was as she ran her hand over its small little white tummy. She wasn’t surprised as the teddy bear offered no response to her confused question, it just stared back at her, its small blank smile plastered on its face.
“Hmmm... alright, whatever. Come on little guy.” She said as she took the teddy bear with her and set it down next to her on the couch as she went back to her reading that had been interrupted. She did her best to focus on the words she was reading, but her mind kept thinking still of all the possibilities of who could be responsible for the little bear sitting next to her. Her favorite idea was probably the fact that it could even have come from a secret admirer. Maybe this cute little bear was only the first gift of many. Maybe soon enough she’d discover flowers or chocolates on her doorstep. As she delved deeper into her romance novel, her mind swirled with all sorts of fantasies of her own possible future romantic whirlwind. Though she didn’t think anything of the small headache she was starting to get.
