Sandra hadn’t been out of school for very long before she got swept up in her own whirlwind version of love, or at least the best version of love she’d ever experienced. It had all happened so fast and totally by chance, but ‘it was love’ she told herself. You can never plan for love to happen, it just does. Unfortunately, she might soon enough wish that this love had never come into her life...

She’d been working as a barista in her local coffee shop. It had seemed like any old day, but it wasn’t. Sandra was a pretty hard worker and normally nothing threw her off. The last couple weeks though, something had. He was tall, dark, and handsome; almost like something out of one of her romance novels. His name was Richard and the way he smiled at her every time he came into her coffee shop made her weak at the knees. There was just something about those blue eyes that kept her thinking about the dark stranger hours after she’d hung up her apron and gone home. He was surely older than her, even at her age of 24 he was at least ten years her senior, but she didn’t much care. She contemplated saying something more than her usual customer service speech to him for weeks until finally she worked up the courage to do something bold.

After he’d ordered his usual coffee, she responded with a cheery, “Right away!” and insisted with her coworkers that she be the one to make that order. After she made the drink perfectly, one of the perfectest cups of coffee she’d ever made at the shop, she took her black sharpie to write a little extra something on the cup. She called Richard’s name out and waited for him to come so she could hand him his cup personally, their fingers brushing against each other slightly as he smiled and thanked her, walking out with the cup. She knew that it would surely only be a matter of moments before he noticed the cute hearts drawing next to a phone number she’d added onto his cup.

The rest of her shift seemed to crawl by as she stared at the clock and begged for it to go faster. Finally, mercifully, over 5 hours later her shift ended and she practically sprinted to her locker. She opened her locker up and grabbed her phone and pressed the button to light up the screen...

One new message from an unknown number: “Hey there. Thanks for the coffee this morning, and thanks for the phone number. How’s it going?” Sandra’s heart did so many loop de loops in her chest that she practically fell over. It had actually worked! He’d texted her back!

The next couple weeks were filled with late next texting, good morning texts, and everything in between. It wasn’t long before the couple started going on dates, and Sandra found herself enamored and falling for her older lover.

She found out that he had a daughter who was away at school at the moment. She found the fact that she was dating a man with a daughter nearly her age a little strange, but she didn’t care. She’d found love and didn’t want anything to make her let it go.

Despite her never having believed something like this could happen to her, it was only about 4 months or so into their relationship when Richard proposed!

As he knelt down on his knee, holding her own hand in his in the middle of the coffee shop where they’d met, he told her how long it had been since he’d found a connection with someone and didn’t want to wait one more minute.

Sandra was quite shocked, but she ignore any alarm bells going off in her head as she wrapped her arms around Richard and kissed him after answering, “Yes!”

Not long after Sandra had gotten engaged, she had moved into Richard’s house. She was quite happy to leave her little apartment behind and being so much older than her, Richard had had time to get his life in order and had a large beautiful home himself which Sandra was more than happy to move into.

The following month Sandra and her lover spent living together in bliss. Then... everything changed when Sandra heard the news that his daughter was returning home for the summer. The younger girl was only 18 and had yet to hear about her father’s engagement. Sandra wasn’t sure what her opinion on the matter would be, but she felt like she should be nervous. Unfortunately for her... she was right to be nervous.

Richard’s daughter returned home and she was furious. Sandra waited in the other room, but could hear the yelling about Richard marrying someone she’d never even met. She hated to admit that she kinda agreed with the younger girl, but there was no way she was letting a brat like her ruin her engagement.
