Lucy had been what she would have called a good nurse for years. She had worked her way through school, she had used her advantages to get her far in her program, and she’d finally landed a job at one of the best and most professional hospitals in the country. It was any nurse’s dream to work there.

Though even when she first arrived, Lucy could tell that there was a strong sense of rivalry in the place. It was quite clear, even on day one, that the other nurses and doctors didn’t enjoy competition in their work space. Lucy did her best to make friends, but the truth was that it was much much easier to make enemies; or rivals if she wanted to use the professional word in the work place for someone you really didn’t like all that much. Lucy had a lot of competition, but the rival who stuck out the most had to be Darla.

Darla had been working at the hospital for about 3 years already. She was a little older than Lucy and it was immediately obvious that everyone in the hospital respected her to the point of almost fearing her. Darla was clearly the one person in the hospital that you didn’t want to cross. She was gorgeous, extremely smart, and the hardest worker in the department. So much so that Lucy could feel herself grow a bit jealous at just how much everyone respected her. The two of them were basically doing the exact same job, Darla had just had the chance to be there longer. Lucy would find a way to prove to everyone who the real head nurse should be. Besides, back when she was in school Lucy had always been the top of her class in everything she tried; why should that stop now?

So Lucy put her entire life into being the best nurse she could be. She would arrive early, take extra assignments, do little things just to try to impress the higher-ups, etc. One day, when she heard someone describe Darla as the “fiery haired kick-ass nurse” she decided to dye her own hair red to battle against Darla’s image as much as she could. It soon enough was obvious what she was doing, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out that she was after the metaphorical “employee of the month” honor. Something that Lucy hoped was annoying Darla, though the slightly older nurse seemed to be the only one in the whole hospital who hadn’t taken notice of Lucy’s rapid success. (Something that ironically was quite annoying Lucy herself.) She even began to spread rumors about the older girl’s performance. She would make up lies and tell everyone they worked with to try to not only make herself sound better, but make Darla sound worse.

Things didn’t become truly hostile until the day Lucy and Darla got put on an assignment together. They were both working on the same case that was high risk and time sensitive. Darla herself had seen many cases like this before and wasn’t too concerned, but Lucy was doing her best to prove herself and working at hyper speed to try to outshine her “opponent” as it were. In the end, Lucy actually did do more work than Darla in that assignment and the doctor thanked her for her work. When the reports came out on the amount of assignments each nurse had completed for the day, Lucy’s numbers were slightly above Darla’s!

Lucy was beaming! She had outshined the mighty Darla and actually beaten her at her own game!

On the other hand, Darla hadn’t even really noticed the competition, she’d just been working her own job at a truly efficient speed she always did to keep her going for shifts over 24 hours long.

This was a detail that Lucy chose to ignore, reveling in the fact that she’d beaten Darla, even if it had only been once. She couldn’t help herself. She knew she probably shouldn’t, but she just had to gloat!

“Nice work in there Darla.” She said, not trying too hard to hide the smugness in her voice.

“You too Lucy.” Darla responded in her low and calm, almost monotone voice. Lucy was a little annoyed by how lackluster her response was when she’d beaten her, so she went on.

“Ya know... I don’t know if you were slipping in there today, but my numbers ended up being higher than yours.”

“Good for you.”

“Heh... I know right? I just mean... you don’t wanna keep doing that or else everyone around here might start to think there’s a new sheriff in town... if you catch my drift.”

“Mmmhmm...” Darla answered, seemingly boredly as she went through filing her reports.

Lucy’s brain nagged her that she probably shouldn’t go too far, but she couldn’t help it. “Ya wanna know something else?” She asked, not waiting for Darla to answer before continuing. “A better place might be to work in the infant’s station for a while.”

Darla’s ears seemed to perk up a little as she turned just slightly towards Lucy. “Oh really? And why’d you think that?”

Lucy realized she would have to keep going, now that the other girl had finally responded. "Well, the babies are usually the easiest to work with, and so it might be better for you to take a break and stick with the babies for a while. It might be where you belong.”
