Maybe Julie really should have listened to her in the first place. If they had figured out a better way to schedule things out, things might of not had to come to this.

Julie and her friend Amber had been planning this road trip for over a year. It had taken a lot of dedication but they had been able to map out their destinations to the day, and figured out exactly where they wanted to go. They were gonna go all the cross country in the best road trip anyone had ever done before. Despite Julie’s hesitation to do so, they ended up booking no hotels along the way, opting to just sleep in the car during their entire cruise. (Better for saving money and for saving time.) They had to save all the time that they could with how strictly they had planned out their days.

“We’re barely gonna have time for any bathroom breaks.” Julie called out as they were finishing packing up the car a few evenings before the start of the trip.

“We’re gonna skip em, duh.” Amber had replied as she finished packing up one of her bags. Julie had laughed in return, but Amber hadn’t said anything else nor turned to her to imply she was joking. Julie found that a bit odd, but had brushed it off and forgotten about it.

The both of them were very excited to get their trip started and had been discussing the last bits of information the night before. Julie was gonna pick Amber up the next morning and they were gonna get on the road bright and early.

“Is there anything we forgot to pack?” Julie asked, looking around a little frantically, careful not to let her glasses fall off. “We could always stop on the way at a store but our days are already gonna be so tightly packed as it is. We scheduled a run to the grocery store during week three. We need supplies to last until then.” The two of them rattled off a list of essentials; the typical travel items: toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, snacks, baby wipes... Julie looked down at the list and noticed that Amber had put a check mark next to FIFTEEN boxes of baby wipes! “Holy shit, what’d you pack so many of those for?” Julie questioned her.

“Trust me, I’m sure we’ll go through a lot of them. That might not even be enough for the amount of time we’ll be gone.”

Julie gave Amber a pointed look over her glasses, wondering how often the girl spilled stuff or got sticky stuff on her hands to warrant that many baby wipes for a trip this long. “If you say so...” Julie said, shaking her head a little bit.

“Oh, speaking of that; did you get your protection? I got mine all packed up already.” For the third time that week, Julie flashed her best friend an odd glance.

“Protection? What’d you mean? Like tampons? We already checked that stuff off.” Now it was Amber’s turn to chuckle a little.

“No silly not tampons. Your “Protection” protection. Remember honey, not bathroom breaks.” Amber only called her friend honey when she was being purposely facetious or even a little condescending to her; especially because she knew it kinda annoyed Julie who found it a childish nickname, especially coming from someone who was younger than she was. Amber gave Julie a small wink as she went back to her own list and continued checking off the things she was sure was in the van.

Despite herself, and despite her knowing that her friend was making a joke, Julie found herself blushing a little at what she was implying. “Oh... uh yeahhhh, totally. Totally got my protection.” She said softly, trying to be done with this topic so they could switch to something else.

The rest of the evening went pretty normally. The two them discussed their last minute business, had some food, and then called it a night. The road trip of their dreams would start the next morning.

*****

The next morning all seemed well as the two girls got their trip started right on schedule as they planned. Julie felt kinda weirded out at this point though as Amber kept her strange joke going by telling her she was going to “use the toilet one last time, the last time for a while”. She really was all in on this joke wasn’t she? Julie thought.

The two girls got on the road with Julie taking first shift in the driver’s seat and Amber laying back and having a snack while she showered social media’s with updates on the start of their journey; insisting on documenting their time all around the country. For a while, everything was amazing. The two girls were laughing and talking, the scenery was beautiful, and they were only starting to get to be not too far from destination #1!

Then, the words that came out of Amber’s mouth just as they passed the border to get into a new state, would completely change Julie’s opinion on this entire trip.

“Hmm, I kinda gotta pee.” The girl said softly with a smile.
