Chapter 1 = On the Road to Success

It was a surprisingly cool day in Illinois for it being only early August. The car was a small red SUV bumping down the road at a speed that some may call reckless. In the back seat was a young woman who was at the moment quite annoyed with her parents. Her name was Daisy. She was 18 years old, fresh out of high school and already her parents were trying to send her off to someplace new.

“It’ll be good for you, help you to have a bright future.” Her Mother had said.

“Just try the place Daisy,” Her other Mother had added. “If you really don’t like it then we’ll consider letting you come home. We’re doing this for you, ya know? This is one of the most pristine private colleges in the country! I hear kids come out of this place as strong and confident young adults with more job offers than they can even handle. Isn’t that something you want?” She asked.

“I guess so.” Daisy said with a small shrug. She had never cared much for a lot of job offers. She was much more interested in her art. Dancing, painting, poetry; anything that she could find that would help her express herself. Her parents were more focused on her grades and her career. They clearly wanted her to become a teacher or a lawyer. Something with a more steady paycheck. Part of her knew that they were right, and that they were only trying to do what was best for her, but at what cost?

Both her Moms were in the front seat chatting like they had just discovered what Disney was. Daisy sighed as she occupied her time staring out the window and trying to imagine what the clouds looked like. She could swear that she saw a duck in one of them! You just needed to squint your eyes a little and tilt your head 40 degrees to the right.

They had been driving for almost 4 hours. Without her car with her, escaping this school even just to go to the movies or the mall would be a pain in the ass all its own. She prayed she wouldn’t have to stay there for very long.

It had been a while since their last stop and Daisy knew that nature was starting to call. “Hey Mom?” Daisy said.

“Yes?” Both of her Mother’s responded simultaneously in the annoying way that they did whenever Daisy didn’t specify which one she was talking to. Daisy rolled her eyes.

“Either of you, is it okay if we stop soon? I need to pee.” Her Mother that wasn’t driving looked back at her and smirked a little knowingly before turning back.

“Yeah, I guess it has been a while since that gas station we passed in Berwyn. Next exit we pass, we’ll stop sweetie.” Daisy was glad to hear that because now that she’d mentioned it, she could feel her urge to go growing more and more. As several minutes passed by the girl could feel her need to go getting worse. She never did have the biggest bladder in the world. She normally had to pee every few hours; it was quite annoying to be honest. She had always hoped that when she got a little older, like high school age, that her bladder would become stronger, or something, but it never really did. Her stupidly small bladder led one of her Mother’s to then bring up her biggest insecurity,

“Oh speaking of needing to pee,” She turned back to look at Daisy. “Daisy honey, did you remember to pack your pull-ups?” She whispered the last horrible word as if every single one of them in the car didn’t already know exactly what she was talking about.

Daisy could feel her jaw drop a little. Both of her Moms knew how sensitive she was about that. “MOM! Oh my god! They are not pull-ups! They’re just... padded underwear ... and I only wear them at night! And only sometimes, not even every night.” Daisy wanted to curl into a ball and disappear at how embarrassed she felt as she tried to stammer out her lame excuses. She felt like a toddler who was trying to convince her babysitter that she didn’t need to be put in protection to go to sleep. For the most part, the 17 year old girl didn’t need to wear any sort of protection; but at night, when she was asleep and her brain was turned off, Daisy sometimes had some inevitable accidents. It usually wasn’t that much, but it was a thing that seemed to happen often enough to make her Mom’s buy her some new protection every once in a while. She hated it. She wished she could take all of her “protection” and burn it in their fireplace... but she knew she couldn’t do that. Admittedly though, she felt a little bad about getting worked up over it after she noticed the serious look pass over her Mother’s face.

“Oh that’s right, I’m sorry sweetie. That’s right your um... padded underwear, of course. Did you pack them?” Daisy was mortified at the question; she was 18 years old! A high school graduate! She was supposed to be moving on in her adult life and becoming a real grown-up, but here she was being asked by her Mommy if she packed her special “underwear” just in case she piddled herself in her sleep. Daisy wished she could find a rock to crawl under and die.

“Yes Mom,” Daisy said begrudgingly. “I packed them.” The young girls face was burning red hot with embarrassment. She hadn’t wanted to pack the cursed things, but she knew she might regret it if she didn’t.

Thank god that at that moment the trio in the car reached the gas station, saving Daisy from the rest of this awkward conversation. Before either of her Mothers could say much else she hopped out of the car and headed towards the gas station.

“Oh sweetie,” One of them called before handing Daisy a 20 dollar bill. “While you’re in there, grab us some snacks.”
