Playing pretend is a pastime that all of us do at one time or another. We mostly do it during our childhoods, but some people do it all the way through their lives. Most of the time playing pretend is a good thing, it can be the start of fun ideas or be responsible for the beginnings of great works of art. In other occasions though people use “playing pretend” to lie to themselves. To make believe that something about themselves just isn’t the case. Some people go their whole lives in a false sense of security, but other times our game of “make believe” is directed pointed out to us. Lilly was one of the cases of the latter.

Lilly was a nice enough girl. She got good grades, she had a lot of friends, she stayed out of trouble as often as she could; but sometimes even being a nice person just isn’t enough. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Lilly had always thought of herself as a “big girl”. After all, she was 22 years old. She wasn’t a child by any means. Yes, she sometimes still shopped in the “children” section of stores, and yes she often found herself being told what to do by other adults. That all didn’t matter though! She was a big girl and she knew it... and yet, she often found difficulties fitting in. She always seemed to be either the youngest in a group of friends or the shortest one in her class. People always just seemed to naturally want to treat her like a child. She had come to terms with the fact that people thought she was “cute”, but she was 22 now! An adult! Enough was enough... or so she thought.

Lilly had been a babysitter for years, and once she graduated college she got a job at a daycare where she could continue her passion of taking care of children. Part of her insecurities made her think she only was working there to finally feel older than other children. She tried her best to ignore those thoughts.

Overall, the job was fine. Easy enough and it paid pretty well, plus the kids were usually pretty cute... usually. Her real problem came when she had to take care of 5 year old Molly. At first Molly seemed like a typical little girl; eager, excitable, and energetic. Unfortunately it wasn’t long before Lilly got to see who the little girl really was. Molly would look at Lilly, who was almost the same height as her, and question why she needed to listen to her.

“I only listen to adults!” The girl would say. Lilly tried to stay calm and kindly explain to her that she was an adult and she worked for the daycare, but Molly refused to believe her. “You’re too short and stupid to be an adult! You’re just a little baby!” Molly would cry out. Lilly would bristle with embarrassment whenever the girl said these kinds of things; especially when her coworkers could hear the girl. Lilly swore that she actually saw a couple of her coworkers snickering at her distress.

Finally, it became too much for her. Little Molly was really starting to get on her nerves. Lilly prided herself on always being very respectful and kind, but that rule usually went out the window when it wasn’t reciprocated to her. Molly had taken that rule, ripped it into pieces, and stomped on it.

Unfortunately for Lilly, the young girl did the exact same thing to her snack that day. Her poor juice box and graham crackers died under the girls’ pink and white light-up sneakers. Lilly was a little furious at this point. Admittedly she went too far when she started screaming at the girl. She only realized that she’d gone too far when the girl started crying. She was pretty sure that Molly was faking it but it didn’t matter when the girl went bawling to her manager. She was officially screwed.

The next day Molly didn’t even come to the daycare. Her manager told Lilly that the girl had called in... “sick”. Lilly did her best to be on her best behavior for the rest of the day. Her manager clearly wasn’t happy with her. As long as she did nothing else today to make her angry, everything would be fine. And everything was... until Lilly left for the day.

She was walking to her car when someone spoke from behind her. “Excuse me, are you Lilly?” Lilly turned around to find a dark haired woman in her mid-40’s staring angrily at her.

“Uh yes I am. Ma’am do I know...” Lilly’s question got cut off when the woman gripped her hard on the arm and started pulling her away from her own car. “Hey!” Lilly cried out. “Hey, what are you doing?!” Lilly would have tried pulling against the woman, but she was taken so much by surprise that she was just struggling to not trip over her own feet.

“I am Molly’s Mother.” The woman said as she pulled Lilly along next to her. She didn’t even realize what the woman was trying to do until she had pushed Lilly into her own car and buckled the girl up. Lilly’s cheeks turned red as she realized that the woman had put her into a car seat! It was probably the exact one she used for Molly.

“Wait, stop!” Lilly shouted out, but the woman had already shut the car door behind her and quickly went around to the driver’s side and got in herself. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“Shut your mouth young lady.” The woman spoke in a flat angry tone. She glanced at Lilly in the rear view mirror and the girl could almost see fire in her eyes. “I better not hear a single word out of you or you’ll be in even more trouble than you already are.”

Lilly reached down and pulled at the car seat buckle but found it was locked tight with a child safety lock. She tried the car door, but found it was locked too. She pulled on the door furiously, but there was nothing she could do.

Not even 10 minutes later the car reached a small yellow house where Molly’s Mother pulled into the garage. Lilly tried to struggle, but was totally out of her league as the large woman dragged her into the house. She kept pulling her until Lilly found herself shoved into what felt like a large bed. It wasn’t until the large bars came down over her that Lilly realized the dreaded truth: the woman had shoved her into a giant crib cage. Lilly could feel her spine run cold as she heard the loud “click” of the woman placing a large padlock on the crib.

Lilly grabbed the bars and shook them, they held firmly in place. “What is this?” She screamed at the woman. “Let me out right now! I’m calling the police!” The woman stood there with a soft smirk on her face. She was shaking her head at Lilly as if the girl was a toddler doing something foolish. It was only then that Lilly realized that someone else was standing next to her. It was Molly! The little redheaded girl looked happier than Lilly had ever seen her. She stuck her tongue out and laughed at the older girl.

“Hehehe! I told you that you were nothing but a big stupid baby!” Molly couldn’t stop giggling as she pointed at her. Right next to her the Mother stared at her with an unreadable expression. Her hands moist and cold, Lilly didn’t know what to do.

“What do you want with me?” She asked. The woman gave her an amused chuckle.

“I want you to feel exactly the way you made my daughter feel. You’re just a naughty little thing who someone allowed to grow up too fast.” Lilly couldn’t believe what she was listening to. “I mean look at you, I can’t believe anyone entrusted you to look after children. It’s despicable.”

“I’m 22 years old!” Lilly cried.

“Not anymore...”

*****

The next several days went by in a blur for Lilly. No matter how many times she tried to escape from this woman and her psycho daughter, she never got very far. They somehow always knew when she was “misbehaving”. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that they were monitoring her room one way or another. She quickly learned that trying to escape would earn her nothing but a severely sore butt and some corner time. Both of which made her feel just like the disobedient kids back at the daycare. It had been almost a week by now and Lilly’s life had already changed so much. Almost as soon as she’d arrived the woman had stripped her of her clothing and had forced her to wear cutsie dresses, onesies, and worst of all pull-ups! Lilly refused to believe her, but Molly’s Mother claimed that they were from the same exact package that Molly wore occasionally at night. Lilly refused to believe that she could fit into the same pair that the five year old was wearing... but then again, the packaging did look suspiciously familiar. She was pretty sure that either while babysitting or at the daycare, she had often changed little kids into this exact same kind! She couldn’t really be that small, could she? She didn’t even want to think about it.

Instead she tried to think about her job at the daycare. Hadn’t anyone noticed she hadn’t been there in days? They had to be looking for her... right? It took her a few days, but she finally worked up enough courage to ask Molly’s Mother about it. By that point, the woman was demanding that she call her Mommy. It was either that or she’d get punished even worse.

“Mommy?” Lilly forced herself to say when her paci had been taken out.

“Yes sweetheart?” The woman asked in her sickeningly sweet voice. The two of them were in the kitchen, Lilly was dressed in TBD. “Did you have a question?” Lilly stood there nervously, knowing that ‘Mommy’ didn’t like it when she brought things up from her, “past life”, as she called it. She had to ask it though.

“Are you going to let me go back to work?” When she asked it, Mommy almost immediately laughed right in her face.

“Work? You? You mean go back to that daycare? I don’t think so.” The woman turned away from her as she went back to cooking.

“Why not?” Lilly spoke in a voice that even she thought sounded kinda bratty.

The woman turned back and gave her a look that told the younger girl that she was starting to get angry. “I told you before. You are way too much of a child to be taking care of other children.” The woman took several steps towards her until Lilly was quivering in her shadow towering over her. “Listen to me little one, you will never work in that daycare again, or anywhere else for that matter. You made a big mistake when you humiliated my daughter. From now on, you are her little sister, and you will stay that way young lady. Do I make myself clear?”

By this point in the woman’s words she had backed Lilly up until she was standing against the wall, trapped from backing up anymore. It was only then the Lilly felt the strange warm sensation that was spreading in her pull-up. Her eyes grew wide as she realized that the woman had scared her into wetting herself. Her pull-up swelled and sagged with the sudden force of her accident. She tried everything she could to stop it, but she couldn’t! She had been wearing pull-ups since they had kidnapped her but they hadn’t made her use them. This accident was all her own fault! Maybe she was just a toddler after all.

It took her new Mommy a few moments to realize what had happened; but when she looked down and saw the swelling little pull-up, the smile on her face could not have become any bigger.

“Oh no,” The woman said. “What is this?” She reached down and wrapped her hand around the sagging pull-up and squeezed slightly. The pull-up squished and squelched with a soggy sound that made Lilly cringe. The woman pressed it against the younger girls skin and she could feel her face turn even redder as she could feel how soaked the thing was. The woman simply shook her head at her. “Little girl, you assured me that you were old enough to use the potty despite wearing these for precaution. So, what do you have to say for yourself?”

Lilly had no idea what to say. She was trapped. Not only had she been taken and forced to stay here by these crazy people; but now she had actually proven to them and to herself that she was exactly what they had been telling her that she was. She wasn’t playing pretend anymore. When she had been a “big girl” she was playing pretend. Now they all knew what she really was. What else could she say in her defense? Lilly found herself shrugging slightly before cracking a small smile like a naughty child and then very shyly speaking,

“Sorry Mommy..."
