Chapter 1
Cancelled Transportation

It had been a very long day at the office of Ms. Pedigrew’s Photography Inc. Most of the employees were bustling around, trying to finish that last bit of paperwork or fetch that last cup of coffee for their higher ups before the final clock struck the hour that they could all stop. Ms. Pedigrew was a tough but fair boss. She was not a typical evil mean boss that a lowly employee could never approach. In her early fifties, Ms. Pedigrew has been running her company for almost 30 years and had learned a lot about how to run a business and how to interact with her employees. Whenever an employee stepped out of line she knew exactly how to deal with them, but when an employee was a great worker she knew exactly how to nurture that as well. There were a few cases, employees, which Ms. Pedigrew was particularly interested in. Ms. Pedigrew was looking for an heir to her company. She had been running it for a long time and she wanted to be retired before she was 60 so she could enjoy herself for several years. There were several potential employees that she was keeping an eye on. One of these employees was Stella Walker.

Stella Walker had been working at the company since she graduated high school. She hadn’t bothered going to college since she didn’t think it was necessary, though she sometimes would regret that choice when other employees who had made fun of her for it. Her sassy response would usually be along the lines of the fact that she was doing the same job that they were and they all had gone to college. That usually shut most of them up.

Sure, she was a bit less qualified than the rest of them but Stella worked hard at her job and made it to her decent position at the age of 22 because she had earned it, not because she had complained or made fun of other people.

“Awwww… well somebody looks like she’s a little grumpy pants today.” A familiar voice said.

‘Oh no…’ Stella thought to herself, ‘Not her…’ Stella turned to face the other woman. It was Lisa. The taller woman smiled as she looked down on Stella, literally. Lisa had been one of Stella’s coworkers since she had started at the company. The woman was 25 years old and she never let Stella forget for a moment that she was older than her and deserved a promotion more than her.

“What’s wrong sweetie? Work too hard for you today? Were the big kids picking on you again little one?” The older woman laughed to herself as she spoke.

“Shut it Lisa!” Stella said, frustrated. “I don’t have time for this today. Don’t you have some children to go scare or something?”

Lisa giggled. “I thought that’s what I was already doing.” She retorted in a mocking tone. Stella rolled her eyes.

“You’re only 3 years older than me Lisa. Get over yourself.” Stella finished up the last of her paperwork and filed it away. She then picked up her purse and coat and was getting ready to leave. She was going to end this conversation if Lisa wasn’t.

“Whatever you say honey bear,” Lisa said softly. Before Stella could bat her hand away the older woman patted her on the head a few times condescendingly. Lisa just giggled more as she walked away to her own office, her heels clacking loudly against the floor.

Stella was just glad their conversation was over. She hated Lisa. She especially hated how the woman always tried to make her feel like the youngest one in the office. She knew that it got under Stella’s skin and she used that to her advantage. Stella just tried to shake the encounter off as she collected the last of her things. Right as she was headed for the elevator though she heard a DING! from her phone. She reached into her pocket and fished out her IPhone. She pressed the button and lit up the screen which displayed a new message. She didn’t recognize who it was from right away until she realized that it was a notification from the train station app she used to remember the daily schedule of her commuter train. The message read,

 “Hello Valued Customer,

We here at Amtrak Railways regret to inform you that due to malfunctions with our systems we are not able to safely run our afternoon trains for the rest of the day. We deeply apologize for any inconveniences this may cause. We hope to have our systems up and running again as soon as possible. We will update you with any more information when it becomes available. Thank you for your understanding. -  Amtrak Railways

Stella read over the message a second time in disbelief. How was she going to get home now?

“Shit.” She blabbered out.

“What’s wrong dear?” A new voice made her jump. Stella looked up in surprise to find her boss Ms. Pedigrew standing right next to her.

“Oh my Ms. Pedigrew! You surprised me, I thought you had left already.” Ms. Pedigrew chuckled and patted her young worker on the shoulder.

“No no dear, I’m usually the last one to leave anyways. I wanna make sure that all my employees get out fine and dandy.” Ms. Pedigrew’s attention once more was drawn to Stella’s phone. “Now, is something wrong Ms. Walker?” She asked again. Stella hesitated for a moment, not wanting to sound like she couldn’t handle her own problems to her boss.

“Well,” She said with a slight bit of annoyance in her voice. “It seems my train has been canceled for today. All the afternoon trains have been apparently due to some technical error. So, unfortunately it appears that I do not have a way back home now.” Stella thought to herself. “I guess I could take a cab, but that would be an awfully long way for a cab.

“Stay with me.” Stella had heard the words but didn’t really believe them.

“What?”

“Stay with me for the night Ms. Walker. I don’t mind the company. And you don’t want to take one of those dirty old taxis.” The older woman smiled at her. “Trust me, I’d love a guest.”
