Chapter 2
Zoe couldn’t believe that she was really here. She had thought about what it had been like so many times, now that it was really happening she was shocked and excited that it really was.
She was in a grocery store, and she had come with a mission. To buy herself diapers. Zoe had dreamed about trying diapers for years but she had always been way too nervous to actually go through with it. Either that or she’d try to convince herself that she was crazy and she didn’t actually want to try wearing a diaper. But today was different.
Zoe had put her foot down. She couldn’t deny her desire to try diapers anymore. She needed to do it, at least once. If she didn’t like it, the only loss would be a bit of money.
While Zoe was looking through the racks of cute diapers she was simply trying to decide what kind she should get. Even the baby boy ones were cute. There was princesses, dinosaurs, butterflies, monster trucks, flowers… All different types and different colored diapers.
After she was looking for a couple minutes Zoe jumped softly as she heard a sudden, “Can I help you?” Startled by the voice she turned and saw another young girl. She recognized her. The girl had gone to her high school; she was two years younger than her. Zoe knew her face from the halls, but she had never spoken to the girl. So much for her plan of being anonymous.
“I’m so sorry.” The girl said, trying to hide a small smirk. “I didn’t meant to scare you.” As her breathing calmed down Zoe looked at the younger girl and simply smiled.
“Oh that’s alright, you just surprised me.” Zoe looked at her name-tag and saw that it read Rosemary. “Rosemary, is it? We use to go to school together.” Recognition flashed in Rosemary’s eyes.
“Oh that’s right. I knew I had seen you somewhere before.” It was nice to talk to someone, Zoe thought, she was working all the time and just pretty shy in general. The two girls talked for a few minutes before Rosemary went back into employee mode and said, “Well, can I help you find something?” She asked with a smile.
Zoe began to blush as she remembered her reason for being here. She thought on her feet and decided that she didn’t have to tell Rosemary who they were for.
“Um… yeah. I’m looking for diapers for my… uh 5 year old niece.” Zoe could feel her blush grow deeper but she just continued to smile and Rosemary didn’t seem any the wiser. “Of course! Well we have all of our sizes right here…” Rosemary smiled as she began explaining all the different kinds of diapers and what styles there were and which ones were more absorbent, which ones little girls usually liked, etc. Zoe listened to everything she said politely. Most of what she said though went in one ear and out the other. Zoe was daydreaming about what she’d do when she went home and was trying to find a way to escape the store without making her prize for herself too obvious.
Finally Zoe picked up a package that she had decided on. The diapers themselves were very cute. They were pink and had cute patterns around them like flowers, balloons, and kittens. Zoe smiled as she looked at the package. They were perfect. They were disposable baby diapers but they should fit her small frame fine with a little bit of stretching. While she was looking at the diapers another thing caught her eye. Zoe’s heart did a little flip with excitement. She picked up the new item in her other hand. With a wide grin Zoe looked at her newest prize: a pink pacifier with the word Princess scrolled across it.
“You’re gonna get that for a five year old?” Rosemary asked with a confused look on her face. “Uh…” Zoe hesitated to respond, in her daydreaming state she’d practically forgotten she wasn’t alone. “Yeah… uh she’s super into princesses and I think, I don’t know, I think she’d like it.” Rosemary shrugged but didn’t look so sure.
Zoe picked up the package of diapers and the pacifier, also making sure to grab some baby powder and wet wiped. “Is that everything you need?” Rosemary asked. “Yes, I think so.” Zoe said with another grin unable to leave her face. “Are you sure you have the right size?” Zoe thought and then said, “Yeah, they’re small but these should fit me just f---.” Zoe cut herself off as she realized what she’d just said. Rosemary was looking at her with growing wide eyes.
Thinking back on it Zoe realized that she could have just laughed it off, called herself out on her mistake, make a joke of it, anything! But she didn’t. Her mouth felt dry as she looked at the girl two years younger than her who was blushing as red as she was. Rosemary stared at Zoe, still holding the pacifier and diapers she’d just admitted were for her despite them being made for practically infants.
Zoe considered saying something else, anything else. But instead, still holding her packages, she turned around and headed straight to the cashier without a word. She felt like she was on autopilot, her mind doing nothing but getting her out of the store as quickly as possible. She could feel Rosemary’s eyes burning into her as she concluded her purchase without a word to the cashier. And then… she left.
The shy 18 year old got into her car and drove away as fast as she was able; simply thankful that she had already graduated high school. With any luck, she’d never have to see Rosemary again.
Zoe’s mind was reeling with fear but it wasn’t too long before it was replaced by her excitement once again. She’d actually done it! She’d bought herself diapers! And an adorable pacifier! An added bonus she hadn’t even planned on. As she headed for home Zoe gently patted the package safely in her passenger seat. She thought, tonight was going to be unforgettable… even more than she knew…
