She had been so naïve… She had no idea that this was the last time she’d ever be totally herself. If Hailey knew what going into that waiting room would eventually lead to for her, she would have sprinted out of that place and never looked back. Alas, if only…

Hailey was 19 years old and a freshman in college. She had straight brown hair that went a little past her shoulders and bright big blue eyes. She was very pretty. She’d always had boys going after her in high school and things hadn’t changed much in college. Though she really didn’t mind the attention too much. It was late September and the school year had been going on now for a little over a month now. Hailey loved college because there were so many different things to do and try. Clubs to enter, people to meet, parties to crash; she couldn’t get enough.

One day Hailey had gotten a text from an unknown number. The text said that the science department of her university was testing a brand new, irresistible, type of perfume for young ladies and it was inviting her to be the first test subject. Hailey was amazed. While the text did seem a little suspicious she just swept it of as her being too cautious. She couldn’t pass up the chance to be irresistible to every guy on campus. The text gave her an address and said that if she was interested to go to its location before classes the following day.

Hailey was pretty excited when she woke up the next day. She was excited to try out the new kind of perfume. She didn’t have class until 10:00am and the email told her to be at the address at 9:00. She thought a minute about what she should wear and decided that she’d dress up a little. If the perfume was going to make her smell irresistible she might as well look it too. She picked her favorite pair of dark purple panties and matching bra, slipped into a nice pair of tight jeans, and put on a red crop top, and cute black shoes. To top it off she made up her hair all nice and did her makeup to perfection. She smirked at herself in the mirror, “Perfect.”

As she was walking to the address Hailey could feel people staring at her ass. This just made her smile more. She loved being the center of attention. When she was almost to the address she walked past Caitlyn. Caitlyn was her longtime rival in school. She had hated Hailey longer than she could even remember. Hailey assumed it was because she had been chosen as cheerleading captain in high school. When Hailey found out she was going to the same college as her she groaned at the thought of another 4 years with the girl.

“Where are you going?” Caitlyn asked as she walked past. Hailey looked at the girl. She had long blonde hair and was wearing a dress.

“Why do you care?” Hailey said with an equal amount of snootiness.

Caitlyn glared at her. “Because you look like you’re up to something and I don’t like it.” The girl was standing with her arms crossed. She was slightly taller than Hailey and thought that helped make her better and more mature than her. “Whatever it is, you just better stay out of my way.” Caitlyn pushed her lightly with her shoulder as she walked past and trudged away angrily. Hailey watched her go, “What a psycho.” She softly remarked to herself.

When Hailey reached the address she was pleasantly surprised. The building, while not part of the official campus, was a quaint little building with a sign to indicate the science department on it. She knocked on the front door and a speaker to her right sputtered to life. “Who is it?” Came a soft feminine voice.

“Uh…” Hailey hesitated at talking to a speaker instead of a person. “Uh, my name is Hailey. “I’m here to test a perfume?” She said uncertainly. There was a pause and Hailey could hear whispering on the other end of the speaker. She could barely make anything out but she did catch the word “formula”.

“Oh yes! Hello dear!” It was the voice of another woman, sounding a little older and a little surer of herself. “Come right in.” There is the sound of a buzzer and the door opens ajar slightly. Hailey thought the whole thing seemed a little strange but she shrugged it off… She should have trusted her gut…

Hailey found herself in a simple waiting room; the room had a typical dry medical waiting room smell to it. A young woman introduced herself at the desk. “Hailey hello,” The woman said as she shook her hand. Hailey smiled awkwardly as she tried to be polite. “Come right this way. This should only take a few minutes and then we can send you right on your way.” Hailey walked down the hallway with the woman right behind her, she noticed that the woman seemed to be staring at her. Silently judging her as she looked her body up and down. A quick glance back at the woman showed Hailey that she was smirking. The pair entered a small white room with an exam table, and a desk. The woman smiled as she took simple measurements on her, and took her weight. She wrote everything down on a laptop. With another smile she looked up at Hailey and said, “The test will begin in just a moment, just sit still and wait for instructions.” Before Hailey even had a chance to ask any questions or even say okay, the woman left the room and the door was shut, and locked to her surprise.

After several minutes Hailey listened as the same confident female voice was heard over another speaker, hidden somewhere in the room. “Hello Hailey! Welcome to our department. We can’t thank you enough for being our test subject for today’s experiment. Please, stand up.” Hailey, awkwardly, stood up. It was weird taking instructions from a voice instead of seeing a person. Why was no one else in here with her? This test wasn’t… dangerous… was it? It’s just a perfume right? Hailey tried to listen as the voice went over all of the legal stuff as part of the experiment. She zoned it out after a bit, it was all typical cautionary stuff, she was sure. The voice explained to the girl that it was time to test the perfume. Hailey smiled, “Finally,” She thought. The name of the perfume is the “Scent of Youth”. Hailey shrugged, strange name but whatever. These companies always come up with weird names like that.

The voice told her to stand on the circle. Hailey looked at the floor and saw that there was a red circle made with red tape on the floor. She stepped forward and stood in the circle. “Okay, now count to three and then hold your breath.”

Hailey did as she was told and took a deep breath in. To her surprise and somewhat shock two robotic arms came out of the walls on either side of her holding what looked like large cans of pink spray paint. While she held her breath the robot arms started spraying the contents of the cans onto her body as they spun around her body. Two cans twisted around her covering her body in a scent that immediately reminded her of flowers. The scent smelled wonderful and natural, she loved it. The robotic arms stopped spraying and retreated back into their holes in the wall and were gone as quick as they had arrived.

Hailey looked down at herself. Nothing seemed different but her fingertips felt a little tingly. She absolutely loved the smell the new perfume was giving off. Once this hit shelves in stores she actually buy some. Maybe they’d even give her a discount for being the test subject. “Okay Hailey. Thank you, you may go now. We will be in touch. Please enjoy your day, and your new perfume!” As Hailey picked up her purse and headed out the door she thought she heard giggling coming from the speaker. After a pause she shrugged it off and left, excited for others to get a whiff of her amazing new perfume. As she passed through the waiting room she once again smelled the scent floating around the clean room. Without even thinking about it much the smell reminded her of when she was little and too scared to go to the doctor’s office by herself so her mother had to come with her. She immediately felt a sense of dread wash over her. Why was she here? In a doctor’s office? By herself?! Feeling terrified she quickly excused herself from the building and raced down the sidewalk.

After a minute or so Hailey had paused. Why had she gotten so scared? She was 19. She had been to a doctor’s office plenty of times by herself and never been scared before. Strange… She looked at her watch and gasped. It was already 10:32! She was over a half hour late for her first class! It hadn’t seemed like she was in there for very long. She momentarily considered running and catching the second half of class but she sighed and just decided to skip class for today. Besides she was pretty hungry. She wanted to head to the cafeteria instead.

*****

Hailey was waiting in line at the cafeteria when something strange happened. She was planning on ordering what she always ordered, a simple sandwich and chips combination when she smelled something familiar…

She glanced over and saw that another student had brought McDonalds to school. Hailey’s mouth started to water. She loved McDonalds! Especially the Happy Meals that her mother always got her! She immediately got out of line and went over to the student with McDonalds. “Can I have some of your French fries?” She asked excitedly, bouncing up and down with anticipation. The girl looked up at her defensively and confused.

“What? No.” Hailey gasped. Why wouldn’t this mean lady let her have some? “Aww why not?!” Hailey said, a little too loudly. Other students started to look. “Because I paid for this!” The girl yelled back. “Go get your own food you weirdo.” Hailey couldn’t believe this girl just said that to her. “You’re a butthead!” Hailey said as she stomped her foot. Now, several people in the cafeteria were looking at her, many were giggling. The girl with the McDonalds look astounded that a girl her age, or at least looked her age, was acting like this. “Leave us alone you brat.” She ate another fry for good measure. Hailey could feel tears filling her eyes. She let out frustrated cry as she stomped away from the table.

With all eyes on her Hailey found a table in the back and took a seat. She was huffing and puffing and trying to stop herself from crying. She kept telling herself that she was a big girl. After a minute or two something flashed in Hailey’s mind: Something wasn’t right…
