Sigh... As some of you saw on Reddit earlier, I am not pleased with the timeline of this chapter, and will be reworking it in edits. For now, though, it does what I need to do!

... But it also ended up stupid long again, haaaa...

I may be totally reworking it and making it two chapters, but I don't know yet. For the time being, enjoy a taste of action before we dive RIGHT back into the violence in the next chapter!

[Also, this is the entirety of Chapter 18, not just the second half, sorry. If you don't want to reread, you'll have to scroll to page... 17 or so? Not sure.]

A few rules & reminders:

  • Chapters will be dropping as Bryce completes them. That means anywhere from every 1 to 2 weeks on average, though sometimes waits may be longer.
  • Recall that these are rough chapters, with no editing other than a single pass-through as Bryce writes.
  • On a similar note, we are not asking for advice or corrections at this time. If Bryce wants feedback, we will certainly reach out, thank you!

That's it, so without further ado... Enjoy!

The wait after those last lines is gonna feel like eternity, can’t wait to see firesong in action for the first time

Just a thought. If Rei had lost to Grant, Aria would still pick him up for the team. But we would've read about Rei fighting in the Sectionals earlier... :)

Hmm I get what Bryce might want to rework. It feels like it would flow better without the "flashback" and just narrate the whole story. Love the chapter(s) and the setup so far.

I highly doubt a first year would take the place of a second year even if they were injured. The match up would be like rei's first fight against aria, an e3 going up against a c0. Second years are supposed to be mid to high b's and most have manifested abilities. It would be cool if that happened but I doubt it.

Lori

Great as usual.

Well, Galens second years are supposed to be mid to high B‘s and Rei wouldn‘t stand a chance, but the other institutes are supposedly weaker and Rei is notoriously fast growing, if challenged in official fights against new opponents. After a couple of rounds he might actually be competitive, if he somehow makes it through the first couple matches. Not saying that it is super likely, but the scenario could be constructed.

I cannot find the quote in Iron Prince at the moment, but my recollection is that there have been extremely rare cases of FIrst Year students being included in the senior (2nd and 3rd Year) brackets for Systems SCTs (and theoretically beyond) for unspecified reasons, although probably relating to their CAD Rank making it a more viable option than having then seal-clubbing their peers in the 1st Year, or them doing so well in the 1st Year Sectionals that they get a wildcard entry.

John Cooke

Y'know, Bryce... I think the number of readers who will complain about getting a long chapter of Stormweaver goodness can be counted on the fingers of one hand that belongs to an idiot who likes to pick up lit fireworks. Just saying... :-)

Damn...its soo good I hate waiting.

Linda Thompson

Very nice, thanks for the improved chapter ⭐️

Haha, the chapter didn't seem all that long....well written and lots of possibilities to come! Can't wait for the next one.... thanks for writing this!!

Sandy

John Cooke. It was in the Chapter 0. The quote is "While first-year CAD recipients participate in their own bracket at Sectionals and are limited to competing at that level—with some exceedingly rare exceptions—..."

Sandy

I think it's more likely that Rei may got included in one of the second year teams in place of one of the injured.

I kinda like the flashback but it does seem a bit awkward since it is hugely long. That scene with Lennon would be a killer "smirk" moment flashback though

Thanks for the chapter. I mainly am a audiobook listener- Luke Daniels is honestly the best narrator I've come across on Audible, but since it will be some time before the 2nd audiobook comes out, I'll just read it now and THEN listen to the audiobook after. Technically re-reading it

So fun. It finally feels like a real tournament. I feel like getting a soda and popcorn to read these chapters.

"Rei—and Aria beside him—laughed at that, the two of them and the rest of the squad ignoring the obvious surprise of many of the other teams around them as eyes went from him to Lennon and back again, obviously not understanding what could have prompted such friendly banter. A few, Rei noted, also looked less than pleased with the exchange, and he felt a little of the humor turn cold when he noticed one stare in particular leveled on Lennon, not even bothered with looking at him. From the other side of Steelbound, Sidorov was frowning in barely-concealed disapproval while, around him, the other five members of his King’s Law had their heads down without looking at anyone." So what's up between Lennon and Sidorov? The most obvious explanation would be that Sidorov doesn't like Rei, and thus doesn't think someone at Lennon's level should be deigning to interact with him. But Sidorov had a prior interaction with Rei, and it was quite amicable.

2023-04-03 01:01:44 I just don’t think Sidorov knew of the relationship between rei & the lasher! Imagine the super cool full ride scholarship jock acknowledging the existence of the young underdog in Frosh (fresh/sophomore) like they KNEW each other.

Perhaps it has nothing to do with Rei per se. Maybe Sidorov approached Lennon to strike up a friendship but was rebuffed, and Sidorov accepted that because he knew Lennon's personality was distant to everyone in lower classes. But now seeing that Lennon can be friendly to those in lower classes—a first year, no less— removes that allowance.
