Here we go friends! A few rules & reminders:

  • Chapters will be dropping as Bryce completes them. That means anywhere from every 1 to 2 weeks on average, though sometimes waits may be longer.
  • Recall that these are rough chapters, with no editing other than a single pass-through as Bryce writes.
  • On a similar note, we are not asking for advice or corrections at this time. If Bryce wants feedback, we will certainly reach out, thank you!

Special note for these chapters: the character whose PoV we have in chapter 3 is still being explored and developed. Again, these are rough chapters, which means things can always change!

That's it, so without further ado... Enjoy Chapter 2 and 3!

Ah! Redeeming grant. Probably wise, most everyone HATES that guy.

Well he’s very annoying otherwise… finally some depth to his dickishness

Hayden Leech

Hmmmm so three years at school, two in the circuits and then front lines war? Awesome. I like the pace. I wonder how many books it will take.

That was amazing! I can't wait for more.

Yay for big threat looming on the horizon!

Second book seems just as good as first so far.

Bets on why Rei’s been called to the Colonel’s office? - grandpa or - more of central’s live testing

Corwin

He always had some depth to being annoying and a dick. Not sure it was to redeem him though. Definitely adds more dimension to his character. His issues with his father though helps tie in what Dent mentioned in the first book. Can't see Reidon and Grant becoming more than tolerating of each other. At least not yet.

Corwin

Definitely not grandpa. Finding out about a grandchild years later and having to deal with his kid and spouse. That's going to be something slow walked for sure. Just getting paperwork into days world for something like that would be a hefty feat even with money. And grandpa would have to fight the parents. Legally no choice. So money drain right there plus legal battles. I would go with Central's offering a transfer. Everyone was looking at Rei with his S Growth from the start. He didn't know it. But with the Sham brackets there was already talk about transferring him and moving him to a place that was "better". With Central's live testing already done. Nope Definitely going to offer him a transfer. Weeks after it's all done. So bureaucracy moves slowly just like in real life

I can honestly say that seeing the development for Grant was an amazing touch. Ptsd is a bitch to anyone and it presents in everyone differently.

(we got permission to answer this one from Bryce). Bryce is actively trying to make SW as inclusive a series as possible with forcing the mantle. Grant's PTSD is an area he's been wanting to explore for years. He's happy to see the reaction so far, and looks forward to the challenges the character is gonna pose moving forward!

Devin Jaros

I definitely agree that it’s because he is being pulled from the first year bracket. I think it was intentional that Bryce threw in the bit about “the first year brackets are typically separate from the second and third years” and we alllllll know Rei is anything but “typical”

I tend to disagree. He's maybe C5-C7 right now. 2nd years are going to be mid-Bs (minimum), 3rd years will be like the Lasher in the mid-As. I don't see how he could compete. That being said... he would grow faster...

Can’t wait to see what happens next

Harry Vermeulen

Indeed a nice point of view. Really liked it as it explains his behaviour in book 1 better. Just hoping his behaviour stays realistic and we can see some improvement in his mental health in the future. Would be nice to see Grant make some mistakes as he refuses to do a tactical retreat and just see him charge in as he doesn’t want to be a coward. That would seem realistic behaviour for him to do given his childhood trauma.

Harry Vermeulen

He doesn’t have to competitive. Maybe the experience is good for his growth and future potential to winning the event. Letting him stay in year 1 tournament can be boring if he keeps growing with his current speed. He will outclass anyone and will slow his growth down aswell. Also the training with lasher showed how much faster he can grow with stronger enemies. He grew 1 lvl in 1 day. Anyone in his right mind would like to see that exploited.

Gonna be honest I wasn't really a fan of the Grant/Viv pairing but it seems to be servicable. Honestly at this point I am much more conflicted about Viv not talking to Rei about it. Grant was for all accounts Reis worst nemesis and Viv going behind Reis back to meet him in book 1 and now makes her look really bad. Because the only reason I would think that she does that if I were Rei is that she does not trust him enough to be open about it and that would be something that should hurt Rei a lot. Especially since she has been doing it way before Grant even partially got turned around

Anonymous

Didn't like her getting dodgy about Rei's interrogation just to turn around and interrogate him lmao

DeanDer

The Viv/Grant fiasco has really put me off on Vivs character. Confronting Rei about his issues while hiding hers adds to the negative stigma i've formed.

Scott M

I would counter that they aren't "her" issues and that it is respecting the privacy of another while she, imperfectly, navigates through difficult emotions, thoughts/feelings of both herself and other. I might draw attention back to setting clear expectations/boundaries and prioritizing her existing bonds. Just an idle thought.
