Abi pursed her lips. She wanted to scold her but didn’t want to say anything that would blow their cover whilst Rebecca still held the phone. ‘’I was reminiscing about my days as a swimmer. I still think that I can teach Rebecca a thing or two.’’

Rebecca’s mother was oblivious to their banter. ‘’I’m so happy to hear that you two are getting on so well. In that case, I guess you won’t be seeing me until the end of the summer.’’

‘’Okay…’’ Rebecca hesitated. ‘’Hey, mom?’’

‘’Yes?’’

‘’Can I make this a regular thing? Coming here to stay with Abi?’’

Another moment of quiet shock passed from the woman on the other side of the line. ‘’O-of course! You’re practically an adult now. You could live there if you wanted. Though, I don’t know if Abigail would approve.’’

Abi laughed before throwing a sultry glance in Rebecca’s direction. ‘’I don’t know. Maybe this young lady can persuade me. But, we’ll talk about that another time.’’

‘’Right, I’ll let you two get back to whatever you were doing. Ta-ta for now.’’

Rebecca and Abi said their farewells before the phone screen went dark. They both let out a sigh of relief. Lying in bed together, they turned to each other and locked eyes. Abi’s soft expression made Rebecca’s heart melt. ‘’Did you mean what you said? About wanting to come and stay with me more often?’’

Rolling onto her side, Rebecca leaned in to kiss Abi on the lips. The embrace was tender and sweet. ‘’I meant every word. Even if we just had this summer together, I want to spend it with you. If I can add more time, it’ll be nice.’’

‘’I agree,’’ Abi smiled before returning the kiss.

It wasn’t a relationship that either of them expected to blossom over the summer. But, it happened, and they hoped that it would last for a long while.
