I think he did not say Niall when talking about solo careers because Liam and Harry tended to have most of the lead vocals in 1D, at least in the first few years. Niall, while he ended up being an amazing singer and songwriter, was like Louis in the band as far as not having as many leads and/or solos, at least until Zayn left. He also wrote a few songs for 1D, but not as many as Liam and Louis did together.

Simon planned meticulously to keep these boys on leash from the start. From boys not winning xfactor to Simon was 'kind' enough to offer 5 years of contracts and 2 millions each. Simon never did with any act (American idol, xfactor uk, Australia and USA, Britain got talent etc) because he knew how popular boys were. After 4 years, Louis decided to sign 5 more years alone with Simon to free other boys not expecting 1D break?.
