Chiming in to say - there's so much more to R&B than what's described here. Also sometimes you all identify a song as R&B that isn't. What Nathan describes sounds like contemporary commercial hip-hop played on the radio, especially w/ autotune and mumble? Not sure who mumbles in R&B songs. Isley Brothers, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder... Michael Jackson has R&B records... Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey all made great R&B songs. These are just a small fraction of artists. There is also some great contemporary R&B.

I actually love System of a Down, KORN, Coldplay, Nickelback, etc. and I love R&B, it’s a part of my culture, I suppose but many songs by people of color is automatically labelled as R&B simply because of who the artist is. Beyoncé is actually not as R&B as one would think, she’s definitely more Pop-leaning and has experimented with virtually every genre.
