We're now to the point where I caught up to the manga and just got a chapter every week or so (my first time reading a manga instead of just watching), so I love seeing the story coming together in more streamlined parts! Yeah I didn't get that it was Overhaul for awhile, without the mask he just looks like some guy

Next episode is the best of the season!

Obviously, every character name in MHA is word play on something. Lady Nagant is based on the early 1900s Belgian gun-maker Nagant, who sold very high quality weapons--often under the table--to the "enemies of his enemies" in the build-up to WWI. Random note, but at 10:15, Goodwin laughed at the line "Is that really how you feel? That's interesting." In Japanese, strangely, that line was basically "You're calling Deku's resolve absurd/delusional? That hurts / makes me feel lonely." (because that delusion is what linked them all together, as he goes on to say)

Hey will you be watching the Kaguya-sama movie?

Fun fact: when these chapters of the manga were first coming out and the community finally got our first glimpse of all 8 previous OFA wielders, there was a massive fan theory going around about how the 2 facing the wall were actually Bakugo and maybe Kirishima who had somehow gone back in time and become the 2nd and 3rd OFA wielders to help Deku’s journey out lol. All because the black and white manga drawings of those 2 from behind looked sooooo similar to the back profiles of Bakugo and Kirishima (with his hair pulled back) that it was a lot of people’s instant assumption lol. Took a good while before that theory lost traction and was pretty definitively killed awhile back. Now seeing the official color choices of their hair almost comes across as an intentional jab from Horikoshi like “hah you were all wrong ya big dummies” lmao

I love this show so much. Incredibly under rated stuff.

Next episode is my personal favorite of the season. Got all the My Hero magic you'd want. Also your description reminded me of a niche funny reference. When Nintendo added Joker from Persona 5 to Super Smash Bros Ultimate they had a presentation for his moveset and they said a line that the community just memed about forever which was "For his neutral special he wields.. a gun."

Another detail that was sadly left out of this adaptation was the mention of the first users name. His name was revealed to be Yoichi. Yoichi Shigaraki.

Ryan

Yoichi -> 与一. Quite literally "first giver" (edit: or maybe "give first"? Up to you)

I think there's a weapon in Metal Gear Solid 3 (based in the 60's I believe) with the name Nagant. I laughed because I too had just said "that's interesting" so I was happy to hear Hawks echo that sentiment. But I guess it was somewhat off!

Haha, your reaction to Snipe's commentary was amazing! The "most deadly quirk" joke has finally come full circle. I also love that moment with the past holders lined up at his side as support, it's great! I've seen a lot of people dismiss that part of OfA as an inferior copy of the Past Avatars and I just don't agree, at all? It harkens back to it, sure, but it's so fundamentally different. Like, the one Aang talked to most was his predecessor Roku, probably because he was directly involved with the conflict at hand, the 100 year war, but he really didn't get much guidance from them, they were more like examples for what the Avatar had been and done before? With Deku, they are teachers, people who laid the groundwork and share their experience, all united in the one goal. The will of the many coming together to defeat the one. That's what MHA is all about?

I mean, while I wouldn't call Overhaul a victim his drive was to restore the prominence of the fallen Yakuza after they had been displaced and diminished by heroes. In that aspect All For One is technically correct in that Overhaul is at least a casualty of the rise of a superhero society :p

Emman Reed

could have been inspired in the same way that the Lovely Lady Nagant was inspired by Angelina Jolie from the movie "Wanted"

agoodwintv

Yeah it makes me think of Avatar because of how important that show is to me. But the device of getting guidance from spirits of the past is common enough in itself that it's hard to say anybody really copied it from anyone at this point. What I like about the past OFA holders is, as you mentioned, how they play such a present and active role. They're now part of Deku's team, as opposed to only showing up in key monents

It’s not available on streaming services yet; you have time.

Also if you ever do watch Castlevania I think I'd like us to revisit this discussion of whether or not killing someone can also be saving them. Personally like in much of life I've seen circumstances where it depends 😉
