Lmao I snorted so damn hard when first watching the omulet rice part of this episode, especially the way Yuri trampolined off the floor when Yor slapped the shit outta him 😂

Damian's "God dammit" is forever etched into my mind🤣 On a side note, Anya's image of Damian with the snot out of his nose vs Damian's image of Anya with her big sparkly eyes is so hilarious. The disrespect! I feel for Damian.

The speech at 16:30 hits pretty close to home, haha. But for this episode, it really endeared me to Anya. She *is* trying her best, much as she doesn't like to study. And in all fairness, she probably isn't developmentally anywhere near able to keep up with content meant for people at least a year older than she is, but she's doing what she can, and I think it's great how she's fully embraced Operation Strix as her own. Brief language notes: 3:06 Damian's friend says "Urusei yatsura desu ne" (They sure are obnoxious) but that's straight-up quoting the name of a very popular 1980s manga that is being remade into an anime that comes out this year. I'm almost positive that the flower at the end of the episode is also meaningful for the "flower language," but sadly I don't know what flower that is, so I can't be sure, haha. I *think* it might be a lily. If so, lilies in flower language mean "perfection / spotlessness," so then the image of perfection that Handler and Loid project is crumbling / withering away in front of each other because Loid can't get Anya to make progress, and the Handler does indeed have flaws that Loid can see. ....buuuuutttt it might be a totally different flower so don't quote me on that.

Ryan

(Dandelions "tanpopo" on the other hand, mean straightforwardly "faithful love")

Horimiya, My Love Story!!, and His and Her Circumstances are a few Romance anime that you might want to check out then. They delve into the relationship stuff pretty quick.

Becky: Simping over Loid The Audience: “She just like me fr”.

Never heard of the last two but Horimiya is... underwhelming to say the least. There are dozens of romance anime I would recommend to Goodwin over these shows. Clannad, Toradora, Bunny Girl Senpai, Tamako Love Story, and especially Oregairu.

AlexXis Amadeus

Ahhh, Kare Kano. I only know that show because Sagisu Shiro's repurposes his music a lot. Clannad is a classic, but I don't know how anyone gets away with saying Horimiya is underwhelming. To each their own, but I find it hard to put it underneath Tamako Love Story in terms of romance anime depiciting the "ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP", especially since the whole "Love Story" was just Tamako thinking about her feelings, and even THAT was just a movie side-story. Not that it was a bad movie. I still go back to it from time to time, the cinematography is just too good.

AlexXis Amadeus

You want ACTUAL relationships? Golden Time, Horimiya, and NOTHING beats Clannad. It's depiction of family and true love. It is still uncontested in that regard, to this day. Some questionable character arcs here and there, but the overall sentiment of is simply elevating to take in by the end of the show. It's cathartic, it's therapeutic, and it takes its time earning the pain it puts you through.

Aaron Ong

I’ll second Clannad. I idly wait for the day I get to hear some great takes from Goodwin on that incredible anime

A very adult and realistic romance anime is Spice & Wolf. You would love it, the relationship is very subtle and they go through up and downs that you can analyze.

I really enjoyed Horimiya, but the anime adaptation kinda did the series a disservice by skipping so many manga chapters. Had it been a series with a floating timeline, perhaps they could have released a Season 2 and adapted the skipped chapters, but that doesn't work for Horimiya. Just to be clear, I'm not saying an anime has to adapt everything, but when a series relies so heavily on its cast and character development, your audience misses out on seeing growth.

Athena

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku is a great adult anime romance that has characters in an actual relationship!

benj

@Xisalex I put Tamako Love Story because I thought we were just throwing out names of romance anime we want Goodwin to see. Haven't watched the reaction yet so I didn't know he was specifically talking about anime that depicts the actual relationship. Also fuck it yeah I will put Tamako above Horimiya for depicting the actual relationship cause Horimiya doesn't do that either, did you forget? As soon as they become an actual couple the entire series becomes a show about their school friends and the massive cast of boring side characters, the main ship becomes completely irrelevant to the story once they actually start dating. Horimiya was actually pretty good for the first half... and than it falls off a cliff once the show becomes about an endless list of nameless, faceless, entire football team of side characters who for some reason all get their own rushed character arcs and storylines. The show is literally called "Hori" and "Miya" after the main two characters name, and it ceases to be about that relationship the second they get together. (the exception to this being watching the main girl manipulate her boyfriend into physically abusing her because she has a fetish for it...) To me, the whole anime just feels like an author with a bunch of quirks and fetishes who just wanted to bring their dream to life through animation.

Definitely check out Horimiya or Tonikaku kawaii if you are looking for stories that get into the relationships pretty quick

benj

But as soon as the Horimiya relationship actually starts the show forgets they exist. The main couple are the focus of the season right up until they actually get together, than its all about their friends and group of side characters. Such an over rated romance anime, its just new/trending and the manga is beloved but they botched the source material. also its high budget cloverworks so it looks really good animation wise also tricking people into thinking its actually well written.

While it does give more focus on side characters after they are together I still thought that it was enjoyable to see both their relationship progress as well as their friends relationships with each other. Which as far as I remember (and it has been a little bit since I’ve watched it) Hori and Miyamura still both appear in the majority of scenes after they get together which does show their relationship after the fact

Interested to here your thoughts on tonikaku kawaii too if you have seen it!

Kollie123

If your looking for a story about more than the romantic build up it’s rascal does not dream of bunny girl Senpai and it’s amazing you’d have so much to say about it

benj

Haven't seen it, will have to check it out!

benj

Big facts, such a great show. Take the title with a massive grain of salt.

Miguel

Yuri got run over by a truck and didn't get isekai'd. He really has become the strongest being on Earth.

benj

Goodwin still hasn't reacted to an Isekai yet which is a damn shame. Every anime fan has to walk down that path at one point. I think he would love a show like Mushoku Tensei.

kingafreund

I'm not sure if you're onto something here with your thoughts regarding a theme or not... It's an interesting observation, and the Anime team is really giving this adaptation their all, so maybe there was an idea behind putting these skits together. Then again, aside from the Griffin thing, the other stuff was just some bonus material in the Manga, so I was under the impression it was just supposed to be some world building... Hm, who knows...

“Everyone’s favorite: Becky,” (The fact that you say that this episode loll) “This is why we love Becky-Oh no oh no oh no,” “This was me in elementary school,” (DROP THE DETAILS 💀) “Why is this art class also survival training?” “Chance often plays a role to the negative just because goodness is harder than badness. Growth is harder than decay,” “Everybody is so off the bar. Except for Becky,” “Becky’s just way ahead of the game,” (I am living for the immense amount of Becky quotes) “Give him a pat on the back and tell him he’s a good boy. I feel like that’ll go a long way,” “His [Damian] father’s love is the focal point of his entire being,” “This explains a lot about Yuri. He just has brain damage!” “Is it Stockholm Syndrome? That’s why he loves his sister. He just got poisoned into fanaticism,”
