In Attack on Titan 4x28 The Dawn of Humanity, in true Attack on Titan form, the show ends it's season in the most brutal way imagineable: with a flashback episode.

That final scene has two major callbacks to episode 1 and 2 - the titan looming over the city, and Eren's words of rage...makes me wonder if all that time ago he was actually talking about wiping out humanity instead of the titans, or if he just repeated what is he said back then. Looking forward to the conclusion of the story.

Two things I'd like to give my thoughts on. I don't agree that the people in Marley are faceless and nameless for him. When he was standing on that hill and looking over at the displaced tribe of people with the kid who took the money, we saw him cry. Mikasa asks "what happened?" Eren says "Nothing yet." He's crying because he knows what he will do, and he feels pain that these innocent people will be caught in his wrath on his enemies. He told Historia that he knows that those people are just like his mother, but he justifies his actions in his own way. And secondly, I think you might be misunderstanding Eren's feelings toward Mikasa. Eren doesn't believe that Mikasa loves him simply because of who he is. That's why he asked: "Is it because I saved you? Is it because you think I'm family?" He even asked Zeke in an attempt to justify Mikasa's feelings toward him, theorizing that it's probably her Ackerman trait. Zeke said no. She simply likes you. From the very beginning, one of the main themes in this show was "You have to become a monster in order to stop monsters." Jean and Armin talked about that, and Armin told Eren that in episode 1. So, Eren knows he's become a monster, and doesn't believe that Mikasa could ever love someone like him. This idea is echoed in the beginning of this episode too. Mikasa says: "I think Eren was always like this. If so, what did I see in him?" She also seems surprised to some extent about how she feels about him. On that hill, Eren wanted to confirm her feelings by asking her, but she chickened out. So, her question about whether it may have changed the outcome if she answered truthfully has some weight to it in my opinion. And the reason why he used to get mad her in the earlier seasons when she tried to protect him, was probably only fueled by his desire to be strong, not because he was annoyed at Mikasa. He also knew that his mother told Mikasa to protect Eren, and he probably found that annoying as well. My two cents on the whole thing. If you listen to the end credits song with lyrics, the lyrics are all about what could be interpreted as Eren's love toward Mikasa.

The vast majority of the people Eren is about to kill are absolutely faceless and nameless to him. You think he went around meeting every single human being on the continent for the two years he was gone? Just cause he met one group of refugee innocents doesn’t mean he knows everyone.

Jeez benj that's totally beside the point. Have you not watched the show? Eren literally tells Reiner in episode 5 that he no longer sees people on this side as his enemies, and recognizes that Reiner is also the same as him. He even confirmed to Historia that "yes, I'm basically killing people just like my mother". You think you specifically need names and literal faces to recognize that they're innocents just like your own mother?

I was just taking what you said literally, "I don't agree that the people in Marley are faceless and nameless for him." If we are being technical here, yes, they are mostly all faceless and nameless for Eren. Thats just the truth. I am not sure what you meant by that anymore. Clearly it is a lot easier for Eren to brutually murder innocent people without actually seeing their face or getting to know them, just like the real world and our real wars, where people in planes drop bombs killing hundreds of thousands without ever seeing or knowing any of the people they kill. Its an accurate comparison. Yes, I have watched the show. What does "faceless" and "nameless" mean if it doesn't require needing to specifically know the names and literal faces of people? Thats what those words mean chief. If Eren doesn't "literally" know there names than yes, they are nameless people to him.

Hmm, fair enough. I see that I made my comment with a different idea in mind. I was just saying there is a definite distinction between how he viewed them before he crossed the sea and how he views those people after having visited the other side. So I guess you're right. As you said, technically he hasn't seen their faces, and doesn't know their names, so technically speaking they are nameless and faceless. I should have just said that he no longer views them as his "enemies on the other side of the sea" as he once did, after spending time with some of them.
