from here on out the rest of the season is such a rollercoaster of emotions, i'm SO EXCITED

Francesca White

Kyo, talking about Rin staying with Kazuma: "with someone else around he's less likely to get lonely". this line always makes me so sad, he's so resigned to his fate, that all he hopes for is someone to keep his father company while he's locked away

Jake White

Unrelated but out of curiosity: are you planning on watching/reacting to AOT weekly once it airs on Sunday? Or is that going to be something where you wait until it’s all been released before checking out?

agoodwintv

Yup! Gonna watch it as soon as I can and do it weekly, time permitting of course.

Geneva The Weeba

We're almost halfway through the last season!! Where has the time gone

Geneva The Weeba

"I know Ren much better than you do" *YAH, IN THE BIBLICAL SENSE TOO, SHIGURE*

Geneva The Weeba

"I know i run the risk of becoming a Shigure fanboy here, and I can't let that happen, because he's not blond" I *C A C K L E D* We love a self aware reactor

benj

Shigure really does an incredible job at stirring the pot. He is neutral chaos personified. Also just a side note for people who have seen this show in sub, this was one of the best episodes for Shigure’s japanese VA imo, his dub is alright but it doesn’t compare at all. The same VA also does Gojo on Jujutsu Kaisen which is another 10/10 character and confirmed cocky smartass, he is the go-to voice actor in the anime world right now for those types of characters.

Megan

That ending scared the crap out of me too. The happy music at the end was also very jarring.

benj

The ending to this episode was extremely unsettling…I remember watching this first time sitting there like… 0_0 Bruh wtf happened?! That scene when Kyo apologizes to a sleeping Tohru all the way back in Season One... I think we may finally be getting some answers after all this time…maybe.

Mortis

This episode has one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. The scene where grandpa talks about the words and stupidity of those relatives and about how the myth of children not understanding is a lie is a scene I just keep going back to for some reason. It’s not as dramatic or life changing as some other amazing scenes but something about the simple true reality it encaptures is something that makes me love it.

Francesca White

DID U NOTICE WHEN THE END SONG STARTED PLAYING THE PICTURE FRAME WAS CRACKED???? I SWEAR THAT SENT CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED IT

Megan

Reminds me of the ending of season 3 episode 12 of Attack on Titan with the amount of dread and chills it produced for me.

benj

That shit gave me anxiety for the entirety of this Season. Honestly wish I waited till the whole thing was out like I did with the first two seasons cause watching these Season 3 episodes with week long waits inbetween was seriously painful lmao

benj

Grandpa Tohru isn't as senile as people thought eh

raesh

Tohru's childhood coping way always makes me cry!!

Anonymous

Alex: "This is one of the most heavy episodes of the show so far"..................... Next episode: "Hold my beer"

benj

YEP same here...to the very very few haters of this show who always mention how Tohru is a "Mary Sue" where good things just constantly happen to her...show them this episode.

raesh

Kyoko's ghost is haunting both Tohru and Kyo...😭😭😭😭

Athena

Kyo: *flashbacks of Kyoko's dead body* Kyoko: "I won't forgive you!" Me: *jaw wide open* End of the episode: *CHEERFUL PIANO*

Nick

...I'm gonna have to give a REAAAL chunky comment on the finale of this series once we get there. I'm only on episode 5 right now but man it's great still behind on MHA though haha

I will paraphrase an explanation I saw on Reddit on why Tohru is holding onto her mother’s bond so tightly: basically since her father’s death, she’s been trying so hard to not to be left behind by Kyoko, even mimicking Mitsuya’s way of speech in hope of keeping Kyoko alive. But as we all see, her mom still got taken from her, albeit it was an accident. She can’t help but felt being left behind once more. And in order to cope with the loneliness, she decided to cling onto her memory of Kyoko, ALL of it, but we all know it’s almost impossible to retain everything from the past. That’s why she has this unhealthy obsession on everything mom, and was startled when Kyo starting to occupy her heart. This episode also draws some interesting parallels from Tohru to other characters, who cling to bonds, wanting it to forever unchange. Also to designate a bad guy, so the pain is easier to cope. Man I just generally love the writing in this episode.

I both love and hate this anime/manga. Very cute, silly, & touching, but also touches on very honest emotions that hit harder every time I re-watch it. Letting go is so incredibly hard, so I feel for Tohru.

jjkpjm

The way the end of this chapter in manga was cute and without all that sad stuff, just tohru showing kyo her father pic hdjfjfh that ending is anime only ending, just let you know

Amber

I'm a huge shigure fan so i completely understand you saying you might sound like fanboy at times lol his moments in the show always are so mesmerizing to me

K. Verklärung

I think an important point to address about Tohru's trauma is her fear of untimely losing her mother *does* come true. I think it greatly recontextualizes Tohru's devotion to Kyoko in a different light, especially in a rewatch.

Anonymous

i will not lie kyoko leaving the photo frame was a legit jumpscare for me, the first time i watched this episode i think i screamed. this episode makes me so sad but there’s also something so rewarding about getting to understand tohru in this personal level, she feels so much more raw and realistic that it makes you love her even more, especially rewatching earlier episodes! she’s honestly one of, if not THE strongest character this whole series:) i also have to say i love the sheet scene

Rachel Keys

Oh yes. The shock, the surprise I love it. It comes so out of left field no one expects it lmao. You're about halfway through the final season so its gonna ramp up fast to get everything covered and I'm so excited for this.

This ending is bad is any sense of way. Because it led nowhere, and it causes incoherences xith the series. They make it sound like forget, but we know he didn't. How can this adaptation be so good and so bad at the same time ? Granted, Takaya sensei wasn't satisfied by it happening so soon in the manga. But still, they handled it badly. On the Tohru side, I can relate to her so much it hurts. I lost my mom 13 years ago, when I was 11. Now, I don't have any memories of her. For a long time, I suffer from it, because I felt guilty. You're not suppose to forget your mother, especially when you had lots of time with her. I came to the conclusion, since she lost her father months after having me, thta I build my entire life around her and her weel being. Without realizing it. Later, it would be for my father and little brother. It's hard when you think your life has no value, that no one needs you. I'm way better now, and my grief is done. I want to think watching Furuba helped me a lot past years.

Kingsley

Wait, why does Shigure need to be blond? 😂 Am I forgetting some sort of Alex-ism?

Anonymous

I just watched this one three times. This episode was a masterpiece 👌🏽

benj

Alex has a trend of being a huge fan of blonde characters in the shows he reacts to...this list includes but is not limited to: Soren from TDP Erwin from AOT Ed from FMAB and a couple more I'm definitely missing

Brimmy

OH RIGHT THIS EPISODE i love how tohru's like \when is eventually?!\ i love how past me was trying so hard to figure out what would break the curse: do u have to give up something precious? is it true love? is it literally just \eventually\ it'll break?! shit's gonna be wild from here on out o.o omg i wondered why i was like \kagura chill holy shit\ now i see lmao XD stop breaking his house omg XD also i can't believe how much i just was not paying attention when i watched this cuz i was like \when did they say they loved each other??\ literally never just use ur eyes genius its SO OBVIOUS "oh no i don't want to know" uhm u really really do wanna know o.o this anime became a horror anime so fast LMAO my first comment for Ep 7 was "EXPLAIN I WANT ANSWERS ANIME OMG" XD

Brimmy

i'm gonna be behind on mha myself cuz i wanna catch up to the manga before i watch S5 myself then watch his reactions for it just gotta be in the right mind set to do it

Anonymous

Nope, nevermind let's stop being open. Lol as I'm trying to dry tears. Thank you for a slight pick me up. Season 3 is over 9k

Liliana Jimenez

Another big thing that I think also causes this trauma for her (it is mentioned in the anime by her grandpa but many people miss it) is that Kyoko quite literally left Tohru alone in a house for days. So in a way, Tohru's already lost her mom twice (not that I wholeheartedly blame Kyoko cause she was only 20, I think, suddenly left alone with a 3 year old, I might be off on the ages cause I'm going off memory)

ArmdVctr

I so so so love how the show makes it a point that Akito and Tohru are very much alike. That Tohru could have easily ended up like Akito.

I honestly love the forced emotional perspectives this story can sometimes force us to have about characters, and specifically about Tohru. I get why people who don't know the series all that well consider her a 'Mary Sue.' It's not at all true as we find out, but I get how it can look to those who aren't willing to give it a genuine shot. I would say for the first season especially we do have this forced perspective about her and how she's just Lady Jesus and comes in to fix things. As it goes on we start to worry about how much she's putting on herself, but it's slow. It's a crawl. This show spends so much time focusing on *specifically not the inner workings of the main character* and it's fascinating. We start to learn the people around her intimately even though we're following *her.* Because she keeps us at as much of a distance as she does the others, in her own way. Starting from season 1, on a rewatch it's so much easier to see where the cracks start to form. When we start to see more depth with her it's not necessarily because she wants us to, but rather that she just starts *breaking*. As soon as you get a hint of it in Somen with Friends, you get hit with this visceral concern and worry for her, and this realization that you haven't been worrying about her enough - just like everyone else. It hurts watching the episodes like this, because she isn't letting us in, she's coming undone, and you can't help but ache for her. Suddenly this amazing woman that we've seen heal hearts with words is falling apart because there's so much trauma and pain hidden under the surface. I think Tohru as a character is a great embodiment of the concept that we tend to become what we crave and what we need. She's structure, nurturing, supportive, healing, kind and attentive, and those are likely all the things she craves the most herself. I think we often try to cope with our own inner voids by making sure others don't have to feel that emptiness themselves. We pour so readily from our own cups not because we're overflowing but because we know how desperate and hollow and horrifying emptiness feels. The flip side of that is Akito, who is so desperate to not feel that emptiness that she grabs greedily at everyone else's cups to pour them into hers. I genuinely love how this show handles internal balances (and a lack thereof) and emotional trauma and just emotions in general.

Since we're coming to the end of FruBa I wish you'd react to Ouran High School Host Club which is another shojo classic. It has a lot more comedy than FruBa but it actually amazed me with how well it dealt with its characters

benj

Imagine Goodwin loves FruBa so much he becomes a Shoujo Romance react channel full time LMAO I think he'd be the first one on youtube

Crystalrose

Really great episode! Something that they took out of this episode that i was really sad about was a fight between Isuzu and Kagura. It was honestly a favorite moment of mine because Isuzu defends Tohru and then by doing this Kagura understands Isuzu and her trauma more and they have their own reconciliation afterwards too. And then afterwards we get a cute kyo taking care of tohru moment (because in the manga kagura knocks tohru out not just slaps her lol) It's small moment and i don't think i'm explaining it well but it also held so much weight to me so i wanted to mention it. SO if you ever get a chance to read the manga i hope you go for it!

Anonymous

Since the series is drawing to a close, might I recommend you watch She-Ra and the Princesses of Power? The story is very well written and the character arches had me floored by the end of it. I didn’t think i’d like the show at first but I got so attached to the story. It reminds me of avatar the last airbender, steven universe, and the dragon prince all rolled up in one.

Anonymous

That ending was... unexpected. The manga chapter ended on Tohru smiling softly after Kyo says it's just like her to carry around a photo of her father. But I can see the appeal of the anime's psychological horror ending. I guess giving Kyo amnesia is also to add drama? The screenwriter for this also did screenwriting for Erased and I can definitely see his style in there.

Anonymous

Patreon really just ate every reply I’ve tried to make to you so I’m gonna TLDR what I said initially and hope this goes through: I honestly liked the amnesia. I do get why it can seem convenient or like a tension/plot/drama device, but it’s also just incredibly realistic to how our brains can sometimes handle trauma - especially trauma we’re not ready to process yet. The brains of trauma survivors can frequently create pockets of amnesia, or even cycles of remembering and forgetting, as a self preservation method when something is too difficult to cope with. As someone who personally struggles with these kinds of memories, I honestly found how the anime handled it to be decent representation. I can’t speak to how the manga handled it because I haven’t read it (yet), but I feel like how the anime handled it was actually one of the many realistic depictions of how brains cope with trauma in this show.

Kayla

It doesn't come across as strongly in the dub I think but in the sub Tohru is constantly speaking in keigo. It's very formal and for example would be used by an employee speaking to their boss. It's very bizarre for friends to speak that way to each other. So it makes the idea of Tohru copying her father even sadder. She's been a kid trying to sound like an adult for so long.

BirthdayParty

Yeah, it's not really amnesia. Kyo has always been unusually withdrawn whenever the subject of Kyoko's death pops up. It's super noticeable on rewatch when they all pay a visit to her grave in Season 1.

Anonymous

Yeah that's why I find it a strange thing to suddenly add... Like I'm 100% all for mental health psychology representation in media but this feels more like something the anime writers thought of last minute as shock value, since it somewhat contradicts past events. By comparison, Rin's PTSD, triggered flashbacks, and mental breakdown were handled really well due to their consistency (as are the rest of the characters' responses to trauma). I personally like the manga's take as it's great representation for someone having to constantly live with heavily traumatic memories and feelings of guilt while still trying to live a normal life and present themselves as being "fine". Amnesia/repressed memories is also an excellent route to explore, I just wish they actually did explore it, and thought of it earlier in the series so it didn't just suddenly pop up out of nowhere in the middle of the last season (and furthermore, settled so fast). (To clarify, I don't find the anime's choice bad, just really unexpected.)
