The hero’s won! Everyone is safe and healthy! The Villains are defeated! Hurray! …right?

Xylen

And now Chisaki can't even repair his boss/father figure, who he put in the hospital - in his mind temporarily - while he pursued his goals. Gigantic oof.

Overhaul's fate always gets to me, like you said he loses everything but without his quirk its possible he the yakusa boss will never wake up as only Overhaul could fix him

Kollie123

My hot take, overhaul is a piece of shit, but fuck man nobody deserves to have their arms amputated like that, like fuck just put me out of my misery at that point, but that was the whole point, shigaraki knows there are fates worst than death

Jacob Keyser

I feel no sympathy for Kai. He was an evil, cruel, and vindictive man

I only just recently finished season 4 and have yet to watch season 5 even though I started season 4 when it came out back in 2019 and it was entirely because of this episode. This episode was so freaking sad that it crushed my soul every time and forced me to take multiple breaks from the show and have to rewatch multiple times for over a year. Anywho, here's a couple things you either missed or misunderstood or are just fun facts from the manga: - Yea Snatch, the sand hero, he's dead af. He's the first hero death we actually see "happen" on screen (we don't count any of Stain's victims or Water Hose bc we didn't actually see them die, we were just told they did), though Nighteye's was the most explicit "yea, definitely dead" of the series up to this point. Snatch could only turn up to half of his body to sand so he was trapped in a marble with fire and essentially roasted to death. - Two things different in the League attacking Overhaul's transport scene in the manga: one fun and one, well, not so fun. First, at some point in the manga, Spinner mentions he learned to drive from playing GTA. Secondly, when Shigaraki stops the transport van by breaking the windshield and grabbing the wheel, in the manga he actually just straight up disintegrates the driver. - My favorite artistic choice of this show is actually right when Nighteye dies. First and foremost, the music is beautiful and I don't normally pay too much attention to background music during important scenes like this. Additionally, right as Nighteye dies, the song holds a single, drawn out note on the strings, mimicking a much gentler and more peaceful version of the beep the machine would have made when Nighteye flatlined. That little detail is just so good and no one talks about it.

Fortunately for the boss, there is one other person who could save him and that's Eri. Of course, that's dependent on how long he could possibly survive in that condition until she gains enough control to revert him back to before Overhaul disassembled him, but in theory, it can be done.

Jo

A fun (or not so fun) little detail in this episode Nighteye's heart rate was slowly dropping during his talk with All Might and Midoriya, but once Mirio entered the room, it doubled. It stayed up until he did what he had to do and reaffirm that Mirio would be an amazing hero. Also, like you said, since we don't actually see what Nighteye sees when he touches Mirio - who knows what future he actually saw? But whether he actually saw Mirio once again being an amazing Hero, he truly believes that he will become one, and so he is able to wholeheartedly say as much.

Night Eye talks about how the power of thought might be the key to changing the future. Earlier he had told Deku to foresee the future by using past experiences as a pool of info to draw upon. I cant help but wonder if his own thoughts about his quirk were what held him back from changing the future. Having never seen a different outcome than he had predicted, all his past predictions became solid evidence in his mind that, in fact, the future couldn't be changed. Ochaco shouted to him that there is no future but the one you create, and I think for Night Eye it's the first time he really was shown it could be true. He may have wanted it, but he never truly believed it was possible, whereas the students of 1-A are always acting with the belief that they can be successful in their goals- pushing past any perceived obstacle. Edit: Also, I can really appreciate death scenes like this in shows. Night Eye DID die to the attack from Chisaki, albeit not immediately, and so the viewer feels that their understanding of risks and stakes are reinforced. This IS a show where characters can die (even if it's not AOT), so when they overcome the odds, we feel all the more relieved. However, we are also given time to say goodbye to the character during his deathbed scene with characters we care about, and closure on his arc.

Nick

I am still of the belief that Eri's quirk messed with the future somehow

SirLagginton

07:17 He jumped because at the time Mirio probably thought it was a real bullet.

Nick

I also personally think Eri's bandages coming off during the opening for this arc is symbolic for her healing after meeting Deku. Like she's moving on from her past torment Plus, Deku looking enraged and frustrated at the very end of the op to then transition to a confident look ready to fight for what needs to get done is pretty powerful too. Directly reflects his character journey through this arc.

Francesca White

"Uraraka was there" yup basically sums up the girls in this arc lmaoo

agoodwintv

The music is really incredible during that scene. Just went back and watched it again for the final note

Nick

Regarding that edit, I agree. It has a good balance between high stakes and optimism. That's one of MHA's best qualities.

Skyler Anderson

Just a small note, but I think Overhaul screamed out in pain after having his arms taken when thinking about the boss is also because he realized that no one can reassemble the boss to fix the damage that he did to put him in a coma, which is super messed up to think about. In terms of the entire episode, This was at a point where I didn't read the manga and his death threw me completely off. It was powerful, and gut wrenching, and made this whole arc tied off with a bow as the most high stakes arc the show has had. I don't know why but this felt more high stakes than All Might vs All for One when only a single girl was being saved. I think the team did an amazing job.

In this episode we deal with the saddest death in the series thus far... MELON LORD!

Emma Root

You want more slice of life? Get excited then... I really like this first half but the second half of this season is everything I love about mha

Tomura's revenge on Overhaul is one of my favorite scenes in the series. It reinforces Shigaraki's worthiness to be ruler of the underworld, for one. Going back to the shogi metaphor, Overhaul had an elaborate plan but Shigaraki knew that all that mattered was capturing the king. Without his arms, Overhaul has now placed his beloved Boss in a coma that he can no longer get him out of. There's more nuance to the whole thing but it's all colored by the sheer villainy on display by Shigaraki in a way we really haven't seen before. "Next, it's our turn." Using All Might's words against him is All For One 101.

Alex a few episodes ago: when is Suneater going to use the swordfish!? I can wait *Suneater uses swordfish* Alex: hey look who it is *forgets about swordfish* About Mirio taking the bullet, I think he didn't know it was a bullet to erase quirks, he just saw a regular gun pointing to a little girl

Nick

Wasn't it also Aizawa that asked him to eat the swordfish? If so, that's a cool way to bring it back full circle.

malik

A note about Mirio taking the bullet for Eri: I don't think he knew what the gun was going to fire, he just jumped in front of her to protect her from a potential bullet

VlSch

If Mirio didn't cover Eri with his body from the bullet, she would probably die, not only lose her quirk, because it's still a bullet fired from a gun.

BotheredAsh

I said it before, but I think you'll really like this next arc.

7thdilemma

"It doesn't seem like he died. It seems like he turned into a marble."

I've posted this elsewhere before but: I believe that when Nighteye looked at Mirio, he saw nothing. I think this for several reasons. He had already stated that he needs a full 24 hours between activations, and he already used it on overhaul earlier. That’s why he says “that’s the one thing that shouldn’t change” right after. That last sentence would seem out of place if he really did look into the future and see that Mirio turns out alright. Some people say that he was just pushing past his limit. But I find that reasoning to be unsatisfying. It’s more emotional and fitting with this arc that he saw nothing and just went with his new belief that it doesn’t matter what he sees, because it can be changed.

Sonozaki Shinji

This arc is one of my favorites on the anime so far, we see that quirks can be a nightmare on some cases, like what happened with Eri and how kirishima hurt his eye on the day he get his quirks, also shigaraki has a grown from been just a angry teenager to know when to strike lefting overhaul hopeless on the end.

Revin MacGrath

Why do I think Overhaul looks hot all terrified at Tomura taunting him??? But anyway, this episode really showcases how there CAN be good dubs. Overhaul and Mirio's VAs did fantastic these episodes. I've already seen this a few times and Mirio's lines at the end still got me tearing up.

Josh

This episode always hurts a little bit.

Ian

Now that you’ve gotten here I wanted to know if you’d be up to watching my video I made called “Understanding Overhaul” by IanWaffles on Youtube. I’d love to hear your thoughts on my breakdown of the character as I feel it would clear up a lot of your confusions. And if you could leave a comment that would be wonderful.

Jenny bete

Agreed, mha does slice of life stuff so well. I always look forward to the calmer episodes after an action packed arc

Maurice Adler

The worst thing for Overhaul losing his hands is that he put his father figure into a coma and is now unable to ever put him out of it. Thats why he thought about him at that moment and was so devastated.

Sage

It felt so complete to me when Nigheye looked into Mirio's future without any fear. I think he truly believed even if he saw something bad Mirio was one of the people who can change their futures through sheer will. So it didn't matter.

Fizzle

Yeah, I was going to mention this, but I'm glad someone else did. It's not because he would miss being powerful or anything, but that he could never undo what he did to his father. Nobody really has sympathy for Overhaul, for good reason, but that part of everything really kinda hurts. Of course, he created the situation with his own hands, but it must be some kind of special hell where you're the only one who can heal a loved one, and then the power to do so is taken from you.

Will Watches

I think there’s also the possibility that the bullet wouldn’t work on Eri, since it’s made using her quirk, it might not have an effect on her

And here i am again, ugly crying at Nighteyes death. Man, I hate and I love this episode.

Anonymous

It takes a man who lived a fate worst than death to inflict fates worsrt than death. A cruel end to a cruel man.

Kollie123

Good dubs have existed long before this episode and continue to be made after it.

kingafreund

Omg, Melon Lord, no! So unexpected too, what about all those times I expected him to fall, where he didn't, and then here it just happens without warning? Probably was foreshadowing for Knighteye's death. Jokes aside, that scene is really powerful, the moment Mirio gets there I can't help but tear up. Honestly, I still don't like Knighteye, but I appreciate what he brings to the story, and since his death deeply impacts characters that I love, it does hurt me too, but it's also strangely beautiful, idk. Regarding the complaints: From what I've seen there's two big factions, the people that really like the darker tone and stuff that involves the villains, who don't appreciate the school side of MHA anymore; and people like me, who are mainly here for the school stuff and have some trouble with the tone shift, but generally accept that the story had to go in this direction. The sweet spot is somewhere in the middle and imo S4 hits it just right, so you'll be fine, I think. I'll save my overall thoughts for the end, coz I feel that the next arc bookends this one, so I can't think of them as seperate. But yeah, since I'm all caught up again, I can now confidently proclaim that S4's arc is my favorite so far. It just has a little bit of everything. But man, you missed the swordfish to the, well, hand in this case!

J Valentine

"I thought this episode was going to be them back at the dorms with Mineta.." I love have literally the first frame of the preview is the dorm with Mineta center screen. And if you'd like some slice of life stuff, MHA has some news for you..

Brandon Domer

Lemillion didn't know that it was just a quirk killer, He saw a gun pointed at a child and stepped in

Brimmy

lookit my good boy suneater <3 he had a lil nap and was like \brb gonna get mirio and then find Aizawa\ hehe <3 this is the only time I've felt for Overhaul lmao omg i love ur cat XD bro my heart dropped out before they even revealed all might ughhh god this really didn't suck as bad in the manga like yeah it was sad but its just so much worse animated and hearing them talk I held it together this time i didn't cry this time....just felt all the feels

Ana

I really love the events in this episode, even if it was a gut punch in the end. I have two comments: 1 - Overhaul has a very awkward build up, even in the manga, and the anime made that slightly worse imo. The chapter with his backstory is called "Chisaki's warped compassion", which was fully adapted. But in the manga, it feels clearer that everything he does is to thank the old boss ("pops") for taking him off the streets. For that, he wants to return the Shie Hassaikai to its former glory (both in power and money), from before heroes existed. Heroes exist because of quirks, so, in Overhaul's mind, quirks are the diseases that caused the downfall of the his esteemed pops' gang, through those diseased heroes. The first concern and goal in Overhaul's mind is the old boss, that's why he doesn't even flinch when Compress takes off his first arm, but he starts to despair and think about his pops when Shigaraki takes off the second, because without both his arms, his quirk (which works exclusively from his hands) can't be used anymore, so he can't fix what he did to his pops. 2 - Nighteye's prediction getting changed is a source of tons of discussion in the fandom. There's the team that thinks Eri's rewind quirk is responsible, which is a fair assumption. But I don't think so, because she rewinds living things, like cells, and DNA, she doesn't rewind time itself. I think Nighteye just never truly understood his own quirk, which just makes everything he went through more tragic. Not understanding how a quirk works is something we've been introduced to in season 1, in the costumes introduction episode, when All Might says to Deku that he can change his register from quirkless to now having a quirk, since he inherited OFA, and he says that it's very common for people to misunderstand their own quirks and have to change their registers. The old boss also didn't understand Eri's quirk and asked Overhaul to figure it out. Nighteye's quirk is a very delicate one, especially since he must've failed to avoid the deaths of everyone he tested it on. He then went on for 6 years thinking he might have set All Might’s death on stone, desperately trying to avoid it, with every step he took, from rejecting All Might’s decisions to taking Mirio under his wing. Just before his death, at 38 years old, he found out that he misunderstood his own power his whole life. He ends up dying with a smile, in the episode called "Bright Future". All very tragic but with a glimmer of hope.
