i really love this episode! honestly this episode and the next few episodes of season 1 are all banger after banger

Francesca White

i love how deep their friendship is, a lot of anime targeted at girls don't really go into friendships i've noticed. like, in shounen a big theme is "the power of friendship" and the genre has a big focus on male friendship, but when you look at shoujo, it's mostly romance, so most of the relationships developed will be between men and women, and they'll be romantic. i'm really glad that Fruits Basket takes the time to develop these strong female friendships, i hope more shows in the future do the same

Megan

Yeah this episode is really good. I love the depth in both Hanajami and Uotani. I had the same impression about them at first, that they would be one dimensional side characters that get ditched after Tohru meets the Soma’s. It makes the fact that they’re well developed even more rewarding. Megumi straight up manifested Tohru. Definitely best boy.

And finally Hana-chan’s backstory episode - one of the few things I appreciate in the dub is that her English VA is spot on and did very good in this. Would be nice if you considered the sub for Seasons 2 and 3, though, as it is superior. We can only hope haha…The chapter this episode covered is in a weird spot in the manga - I suspect that could’ve been due to the mangaka’s 1-year hiatus - but I like how they’ve fit it into the anime - as S1 is about setting everything up :) Only 3 episodes left and they are all very good - really looking forward to the rest of the reactions as the best is yet to come. what days do you upload FB reactions on here as I’ve just joined a few hours ago?

When i first watched this episode i thought the advice kyoko gave at the end was ominous as well lol but i think its in reference to the previous episode where Hana was feeling lonely and a little left out now that Tohru is getting involved with more and more people in the soma family. I think she was reflecting on how strong their friendship is and even if they aren't always together its not like they aren't close any more. They really and truly love and care for each other as friends and that won't ever fade. *tears up*

I just full on sobbed during that scene on the stairwell 😭 I was bullied a lot growing up and it tanked my self worth. I was ready to give up until I found my friends that became family 🤗 It just made me think of how far I have come and your comments at the end about these characters feeling so real is spot on! I am kind of afraid for season 2, I know pain is coming somehow and I'm not ready lol

One thing I love in this episode is the scene where Hana chan first joins Tohru and Uo chan because it's clear that the latter two have really found somewhere they belong with each other and that trumps all else to the point where they're just really comfortable with themselves. There's something about the right people or the right moment that can make difficulties more tolerable and make events in the past feel like they were all worth it.

They often mention that tohru speaks very politely, and it’s because she always uses honorifics, and doesn’t use slang or contractions as much. It isn’t commentary on her being friends with everyone, it’s more so an odd character trait that’s surprising. She talks like her father, who also was oddly formal.

benj

yeah this is a major aspect of the show that is completely missed in the dub, while its the cornerstone of tohru's voice acting in the original japanese version.

I have pretty terrible wifi right now, but I had this episode downloaded and just finished it. Haven't seen the vid so I'll give my thoughts on the episode itself This was an S tier Fruits Basket episode, and as of now my favorite so far. It packs a real emotional punch that I was not expecting for Hana's backstory. Just uh, how to describe it. It tore my heart in half, sewed it back together, tore it up again and repaired it one last time before closing out. Beautiful episode, loved it, and I think it's the first (maybe second) one to make me cry.

Nick

Tohru, Hana and Uotani's friendship has been built up so well. And having gotten Uotani's backstory a few episodes ago, getting a two parter for Hana feels so good. The elements so far just click together and make their friendship that much more believable, while also stabbing my emotions.

I just love how much her family cares for her

ArmdVctr

The stairway scene actually reminds me when Tohru makes friends with a certain someone in the show.

The best boys in Fruits Basket come in small packages.

ArmdVctr

I like how Alex picked up the theme of "bonds"

The whole “making decisions for someone as a sacrifice” trope is so prominent it actually has a name. Noble Idiocy. It usually bothers me because it’s often set up in a way that feels disingenuous but it makes sense the way Hanajima grew up. She was only able to see the burden she put on others and not the joy she brought into the lives of her friends and family so her assumptions were understandable. I also like that Uotani cut to the heart of the matter saying it’s about what she truly wants.

agoodwintv

Her parents and her brother especially are amazing. It's interesting how that it makes sense that that would somehow create peril for Hanajima, and the fact that this is I guess the 2nd of the two-parter "Tohru friend" backstory arcs where both have their traumas to work through but have drastically different levels of support initially.

JennyLH

I completely support Megumi's Best Boy award! When he was first introduced I was like "my god this kid is so mature and sweet" but then to realize he ALWAYS been that way is amazing.

Hanajima and Uo-chans backstories were both left out of the original fruits basket anime, so I'm really glad they included them in the reboot. It just adds so much to the story.

benj

I feel like I'm one of the only people here who hasn't watched the original fruits basket. It makes me sad that the original got quite popular and a lot of people now refuse to watch the new one cause they already saw the significantly worse older version.

BubbleTea

Yeah you're crazy lol Rather than being some kind of ominous foreshadowing, pretty sure the author was just trying to make the point relatable to the reader. Outside of the supernatural powers.

Nick

Having watched 4 seasons of Attack on Titan, I think it's fair anyone would suspect foreshadowing after that

Nick

You saying "Oh no no, it was a joke it was a joke it was a jo-" as Hana repeatedly says "You should just die" is top tier

Nick

Hana's brain is like the death note...

Nick

Thinking about how similar Hanajima's situation is to any Zodiac child. Even her parents too, she told them to reject her and move away/abandon her. Underrated quote: "She doesn't care, she sees plums."

benj

The "it was a joke" part had me dying laughing lmao

Brimmy

i can't believe my sub ran out before this episode oh my god i will forever love Hana's backstory, she's just so good and such a precious bean i mean seriously did you SEE her smile in the last episode?! \must protect\ I barely remember this episode but i remember crying when Tohru caught up to Hana on the stairs and started talking to her cuz we never got this in the original, we never got backstories so this just makes me love Hana all the more <3 UGHHH the feels dlkfgbsldfjgb
