MHA still coming later! My best estimate is about 1.5 - 2 hours from now.

do you mean Shigure?

Nick

Hello, it is with regret that I inform you all I have taken an L today. I haven't seen this ep of Fruits Basket or the last MHA episode plus tonight's. Instead, I've been watching Kaguya love is war and have no regrets. No crackpot theory comment for now but I will update

Megan

This is one of my least favorite fruits baskets episode. That being said, it’s not the worst just not really comparable to other episodes for me personally. I’m sure you’re reaction will help me find a deeper meaning. Also, I find I’m very tolerant with dubs but this episode hurts my ears. I still think Fruits Basket is fine in Dub because the main cast’s voice actors are very talented. Sorry if this comment is kinda negative. I’ll probably comment more after I finish watching the reaction. Your insights always make me see things differently:)

- I've been watching Kaguya love is war and have no regrets. No one could fault you for that.

Shigure's new name = Kagure lol

Megan

Ok so this episode isn’t quite as bad as I remember but the suicide theme feels a little misplaced. Kinda random but Kagura and Ritsu sharing clothes is wholesome.

Anonymous

Kagure lol. You mean Shigure? It gets funnier the more times he says it.

Francesca White

This is probably the weakest episode in the show in my opinion, but there's still some really great stuff in here :)

Kagure sounds like a weird ship between Kagura and Shigure.

The 🦧has arrived!

This episode kinda shows how dated the show is, a more modern anime would have handled the whole Ritsu feeling more confident as a woman thing better I hope... then again its anime and Japan so maybe not. Will say that a rather meh episode was improved greatly by you calling Shigure the wrong name the entire time.

The anime really changed the plot events of this first meeting compared to the manga... All I can say is... it's still weird in the manga but it flows much better. For one, Tohru did most of her inspiring speech while she and Ritsu were walking home and having a calm discussion, but I guess the anime director wanted to make things more dramatic. Ritsu also didn't meet the editor until later, so 99% of any of their interactions in this episode didn't happen originally. I almost wonder if the director had some kind of grudge against Ritsu to make his debut so... chaotic

Francesca White

well, i think it was probably changed partially due to how problematic Ritsu's original story was. in it they said Ritsu had to "mature" by dressing like a man

Kagura + Shigure = Kagure. Maybe you are just a subconcious Kagura x Shigure shipper, I've never heard that ship before tbh.

Francesca White

That's a very odd ship considering their age gap 😭 (Kagura is 18 but I still doubt anyone would ship her with a 26 year old unless they were messed up in the head lol)

Aaron Ong

I mean, those kinds of ships are normal in anime, especially since the age of consent in Japan is 13. I'm in no way stating that I make those kinds of ships though, just stating a fact that it wouldn't really be all that odd.

Anonymous

@Aaron Ong: The "age of consent" is often cited as "13", but that only applies if the other party is 14 years old or younger, under the Juvenile Obscene Acts of 1947. If the other party is 15 years or older, it's illegal, and the severity of the crime increases as the age gap increases. A gap of 17 and 21 is also technically illegal in Japan. 18 and 26 can be illegal depending on the circumstances. You're really not entirely scot-free til both parties are past 20 years old.

Aaron Ong

Yeah, that's my bad. A quick google search only gave me the simplest form of answer, being: "The age of consent (in Japan) is 13. It's defined as the age from which a person is deemed capable of consenting to sexual activity and such consent is legally valid," but it seems a lot more complicated than that in actuality!

Nick

Ngl I relate to Ritsu's over apologizing, that was me in high school and it was bad enough that it became a joke with my friend group. Although, to be fair, there were a few of us who apologized way too much I haven't watched this reaction yet, since I'm only now getting caught up on the episodes themselves. But tbh I didn't hate this episode. It's a bit mixed. I actually like the conversation between Tohru and Ritsu on the rooftop, and the one between Ritsu and Mitsuru walking home. But I do think there's some poorly executed things like the suicide jokes and then also actual suicide intervention. It just has some weird tonal whiplash to it But yeah not awful. If this is FB's low point, I really am shocked. Maybe it helps I watched it in subs? Not sure I'll probably update after watching the video

Nick

Or maybe I've just seen such bad television before that this didn't phase me. I liked it mostly setting aside the execution issues
