I'm a massive simp for Annie tbh, not when she's murdering Marco tho...that isn't very hot.

Annie gives me the ability to harden

Nick

now hold on a minute Reiner is far higher in the hierarchy of blame for Marco's death. Annie showed up after they had already restrained him too Edit: I'm also part of the Annie supremacy squad though

Lol did you have to dub over yourself when referring to Hitch? What were you saying haha

Wow, I have actually never watched these OVAs, so it's pretty incredibly to see Annie painted in this other light. I did have some sympathy for her, obviously she doesn't want to do all these things, but just from the actions she was shown to do in S4, she still felt cold and disconnected. I'm still curious to hear her motivations be fully explained, I think I get the gist, but just want to be confirmed. But this is just another example of the show having great characters, really complex and multi-dimensional.

lmao yeah this hurts to admit but I was calling her Marlow for a little while there

Annie is such an interesting character I feel like there is so much to explore. I think I'm biased on how great a character Annie is because she was the first character I instantly liked from the training episodes. She was so stone-faced and stoic I didn't think we would see too much of her. She reminded me of Mikasa or Levi, in the sense that she has been through so much and everyone just assumes she would have less of a capacity to care about others but secretly she's a softie. She even helped Eren learn to fight and told him how unfair the ranking system was, which opened his eyes a little to the injustices of the military that he glorified. All those little tidbits of her in the early episodes really made her character noticeable. At the same time she's such a passive character. She doesn’t want to get involved in anything but the few times she puts herself out there, like teaching Eren, is really telling of who she really is. Most of the time she did a bad job lying or hiding her identity probably because the guilt was so overwhelming. She seemed tired of having to live with the people that she harmed and being reminded of how her actions affected those people. The OVA gave some insight on how Annie processes these things. Most of her thinking was very detached, like she was writing a report. She was wary of getting her emotions entangled, but it seemed like her only drive was to keep her promise to her father. Before she went on the expedition, the fall of wall Maria, and even while looking for Carly she was thinking about going home to her father. Her alignment isn't really with any nation or ideal, which is probably why she's so passive about the invasion of Paradise and followed Reiner's lead. And the way she tries to rationalize why she has to go on the expedition and do all those terrible things makes all her good deeds she does the day before seem like a way to atone for her future actions. Like she was trying to pretend to be a “good person” for just one more day before she would have to kill again. It also draws parallels to when she asked Armin if helping him would make her a “good person”. And of course Armin being Armin, knew the theme of the show before everyone and told her, “it is impossible to be entirely good to everyone. To some, you are a good person, while to others, you are a bad person.” And even though she knew Armin figured out her identity; she wanted to pretend a little longer to be that "good person". I think Reiner and Bertholdt are the same way. They were never seen as children or even people in their hometown, but in Paradise they got to pretend that they were good, or at the least normal, people. (This is all me rambling on how I see her as a character I might be way off base)

We've seen that little scene with her father apologizing to her before, I guess at the end of season 1? Anyway, this glimpse into her life and just a sprinkle of more backstory sort of gives more context to that, and that in turn gives some more context to that outburst she had when she kicked the shit out of Reiner after Marcel died. I'm sure there's still some of that Marley upbringing in there, but more than anything else she just seems tired and resigned and focused on one task at a time, one foot in front of the other.
